Mr Daniol Buckley, a shopkeeper and j an ex-member of tho Dail, has been appointed Governor-General of the Irish Free State in succession to Mr James , McNeill. The communique states: " lli'j j Majesty has appointed Mr Buckley on j the advice of the Free State Execu- ' tivc." 1 The appointment has occasioned tremendous surprise, but Mr Buckley is j esteemed by all classes. He recently retired from business, transferring his i shop to hi.s son. The new Governor is j closely interested in national movements, especially tho revival of tho Irish language. Ite participated in the rebellion of 1916, organising a small Red band of voluntoers and marching oil/ Dublin. Ho was arrested and deported, but was released at the Christmas amnesty.
lie was elected Deputy for Kihlare, and voted against the acceptance of the Anglo-Jrish Treaty. lie was defeated in the 1931 election.
