NEW ZEALAND-MADE HOSE.
TO THB EDITCjP 01 THE PBE33 Sir, —As we are manufacturers of hosiery in New Zealand, we were interested and somewhat amused to read in Tub Pbes-j yesterday a report of Dr. Beeby's criticism of New Zealand-made hose. The report states that Dr. Beeby "made a comparison of a pair of English stockings with a New Zealand produced pair ; which suffered in comparison." This comparison was made at a meeting of the Canterbury Manufacturers' Association on Monday evening. We would respectfully like to ask Dr. Beeby how and where ho obtained the knowledge which enabled him to demonstrate and prove to his own satisfaction that the New Zealand product was inferior. Has he a practical knowledge of the weight and value of the raw material used? Is he so expert in hosiery manufacture that he can correctly estimate the various costs of processes of making and finishing, and thus make his comparison and arrive at the actual value of each pair? We wonder why Dr. Beeby selected hosiery to illustrate his point. Did he hy any chance know that there would not be amongst his audience one practical hosiery manufacturer to criticise o- combat his opinion? Why is Dr. Beeby so contemptuous in speaking of - New Zealand-made goods? Does he really think that he is conferring benefit on New Zealand or that he is helping to improve conditions of New Zealand workers? We manufacturers are always willing lo listen to criticism and to adopt any practical suggestions offered us that will enable us to improve our methods or our products. Wo do, however, ask that the suggestions should emanate from someone' who has the prac- i tical knowledge that makes such suggestions useful and valuable. We would be perfectly willing at any time to demonstrate and compare the hosi that we are making with an imported hose of a similar nature and prove to any unbiased person the truth of our contention that the New Zealand article will ensure to the wearer better and longer service. The women of New Zealand who buy and wear New Zea-land-made hose, are unanimous in their
praise of the quality and value given for the price!— Yours, etc., "SELWYN" HOSIERY MANUFACTURING COMPANY, LTD., Per W. C. Fairbrotlier, Managing-Director. September Bth, 1932
