FOOTBALL.

Rugby union. TO-DAY'S SHIELD GAME. AUCKLAND V. CANTERBURY. Canterbury will meet very stem oppbsition from Auckland in tho challenge match for the Eanfurly Shield to be played at Lancaster Park this afternoon. The teams selected give a clear indication that the match should be one of the most exciting for the premier football trophy that has ever been played on the Oval, given fast conditions, and even if the weather is wet then the forward'battle with outstanding New Zealand forwards in tho field should be wcrth going a long way to by tho arrival of reinforcements from Auckland for this match in Corner, Solomon, and Bush, the Auckland side, ou paper at least, appoara a most formidable combination, and should Canterbury withstand tho challenge it must be after a hard encounter. Heazlewood, the full-back played during the tour, has an injured shoulder, and Bush has come to take tho position. lie is a worthy successor. It will be rememberod that he scored 14 points with his kicking against the Australian team at Auckland last year. He played on Lancaster Park last season. Corner, the other rearguard reinforcement, won the hearts of the southern supporters of the code at Lancaster Park when ho made such an impressive showing against the English Test side in 1930. lie played in three Tests, and this season was the second half on tho tour of Australia by tho All Blacks. Outside him he will have two five-eighths who have a reputation for reliability, but who arc not known here. Both handle well, and Jamieson has played for his province. He will be the first five-eighths. That is his true position. Caughey, the centre, toured Australia with tho All Blacks, and impressed in Christcliurch early this season by his display for the North Island side. On tho wings are I>. Milliken, a brother of Mr T. Milliken, a member of tho Management Committee of tho Canterbury Bugby Union, and H. Pearson. The latter is very light for a provincial three-quarter, but is reputed to bo fast and clever. The Forwards. Forward tho Auckland side has the advantage of weight, averaging 13st 12Jlb, as compared with the Canterbury average of lost 61b. The Auckland pack will include easily the heaviest forward seen on Lancaster Park for some time— M., Kahu n 7st imhv t* t--" the 'onand •' ' •ary on • . . ; • ies . irs re "■ ' ' ''2, i . t: ....... ■. I , , : ' I I of tho pack. F. Solomon, wiio played so brilliantly in the North v. South match early this season at Lancaster Park, and who made a wonderful reputation for himself by his play in Australia during the recent tour of the All Blacks, will be the odd man in the back row, but in his type of play he probably will not pack down with each serum, preferring to play a type of wing-forward game capable of most successful exploitation under the amended rules for scrum formation. The Canterbury team, again reviewing form indicated by it as set out on paper, appears to be capable of bright and fast football, and should be much stronger m combination than any team yet put in the field this season. Bouterey at half and Hazelhurst at first five-eigths should give direction and stiffening to the attack whefe it has been lacking in earlier games. The forwards, too, should improve on their other displays this season. lhe curtain-raiser to the Shield game should be an interesting match, Canterbury B v. Asnburton. The band of the Ist Canterbury Kegiment will be in attendance. 1 The teams are:— Auckland. Full-back—E. G. Bush 34st. Three-quarters—H. Pearson lOst 111b, T. H. C. Caughey 12st 81b, D.
