Til some cases the men lost a week's work. Automobile Association. The Urey branch of Die Canterbury Automobile Association held its annual meeting last evening, Mr G. K. Marker presiding over a full ;> t tendance of members. The annual report, which set out fully the activities of the branch during the past year, and its intentions for the coming year, was read and adopted. The election of officers was as follows President, Dr. \V. McKay; vicepresident, Mr G. I{. Ilaiker; committee: Messrs I'. C. llcaphy. 11. C. Garde, E. McDonnell, V. Beck, I'. Hambletou, A. J. It was resolved to ask the Highways Board to expedite the removal ot' the blockage in the Otira Gorge, near the Bridal Veil. It was also decided to write to the Arthur's l'ass Domain Board regarding the same matter.

It was decided ■to send a remit to the Canterbury Automobile Association supporting the remarks of the Chief Justice, the Kt. Hon. Sir Michael Myers, that iu the settlement of civil motor claims, two assessors and a judge should hear the cases, instead of a jury, as at present. Tilt; Grey Electric Power Board met last evening, the chairman, Air J. B, Kent, presiding. A discussion arose regarding the white pine timber likely to be endangered by the waters from the Board's dam iu the Arnold river, at Kaimata, the amount being estimated at 87,000 feet. It was decided that Mr Learmont, the Hoard's supervisor at Kaimata, and the Forestry Department's representative, inspect the area and ascertain the amount of timber likely to be affected. A deputation from Blackball waited on the Board to ask for a reduction in the charges for current to consumers there who were unemployed. There were about sft consumers affected. Mr Greenslude pointed out that there were consumers throughout the district, who had the misfortune 1o be unemployed just now. It' a concession was made to one section of rhe unemployed consumers, the others would expect the same relief. The chairman promised to have the request of the deputation carefully considered. The engineer reported that the number of consumers linked up during the month was 27. making the total consumers at daft; -077. Extensions to 58 existing con sinners had also been carried out.

The consulting engineers al tlie hydro M'orlis, reported that except for a small amount ot tidying up to be done at this works, exerything -was completed, and the plant would he ready to operate next week.

It was decided to call tor applications for the position of assistant nicterreader, at a salary of £5 His per week", the applicants required to be licensed wiremen.

It was resolvid to invite the Minister for Public Works to perform the official opening of the hydro works at Kaimata, and if lie is unable to do so, the chairman of the Board, Mr I!. Kent. The tentative date for the opening ceremony was fixed as September L'lst. Other arrangements for functions in connexion with the opening, were left with the chairman and secretary.
