RAILWAY FREIGHTS.

TO THH EDITOK OP TIIE TCIKSS. Sir,—l have been interested in reading tho letter in The Press on railway freights. As it seems that most of the writing has been on account of farmers' goods, I would like to write on behalf of the consumers of coal. Coal merchants in Ashburton have reduced the price of coal to the consumer, thus cutting down their own profits.' Why should not the railways reduce the freights and thus do their bit? Coal from Southland costs 22s per ton and from Bapahoe 20s 8d to land in Ashburton, and besides this the merchants arc faced with as much as 7cwt short weight in some trucks when they arrive. It is time something was done to reduce coal freights.—Yours, etc., ONE WHO KNOWS. Ashburton, August 11th, 1932.
