LAND TAX.
FLAT EATB OPPOSBD BY , SHBEPOWNBRS. A protest against the principle of imposing a flat tax on land ift contained in the annual report of the Canterbury Sheepownera' Union whieh waa adopted by 'the annual meeting last night. "Members -will appreciate the great assistance given to our industry through the remission of the graduated land tax, which has been replaced J»y a nominal flat rate of tax," slated the report. "The principle underlying this flat rate of tax is, however, as unsound as was that of the old form of land taxation, any tax of this nature obvir ously being a tax on one form of capital investment only. It is still essentially a capital tax, and one which, is applied directly to capital'invested in what must be admitted as the most desirable form of investment in the interests of the Dominion. "Tour executive trusts that financial conditions will be such in the near future as to allow of the total' remission of taxation on land. Tho relief given by the Government is. however, of very great value, and w;ll be deeply appreciated by producers generally:"
