THE ORPHANAGES.

COMBINED APPEAL FOR FUNDS. STREET COLLECTION TO-MORROW. Interest in to-morrow's street appeal in aid of the funds of the Anglican, Presbyterian, and Methodist Orphanages has been well maintained since the collection was postponed on account of the weather last week. The large body of 700 collectors will take up their posts in the City and suburbs to-mor-row with the same enthusiasm with which they were prepared to face the snowstorm and bitterly cold conditions of Friday. In the meantime, too, the efforts of various organisations connected with the-appeal have resulted in the collection of over £4OO. The "radio evening" was an unqualified success. Sums of money are still coming in daily from people who held radio entertainments at their homes, and the amount from this source has now reached £3OO. In addition the challenge of one listener who to give £5 toward the appeal if nine others would do the same has been responded to most generously, and eight £5 notes have now been received by the appeal executive. The contributions of the Bible classes of the City to the "breafl bill" fund have now reached £7O. Members of the Bible classes and other Church organisations will be assisting with the collection in the evening, when their particular duty will be to complete the "mile of pennies" 'toward which the primary schools have been contributing during' the last few weeks. . The combined appeal mil -have something of a "Corner" in coppers to-morrow, for if the object in this direction is achieved 42,240 pennies in their special cardboard containers will be placed, eightpence to, tho foot, along the streets of the City. There has been an excellent response to the appeal in the country districts for produce for the children's homes. Miss Esther James, who recently walked the length of New Zealand with the object of advertising Dominion-made goods, has consented to assist in the collection to-morrow, and she will be attired in the locally made "hiking" outfit which she wore on her long tramp. The headquarters of the appeal will be Hays, Ltd., where the collectors will be provided with refreshments. There will be a produce stall in Victoria square.
