SUBSIDISED SHIPPING COMPETITION.

TO TH* SDITOB OX THX PBSSB •' Sir, —Beading so much in The Piusss concerning the competition between British and foreign ships trading betweed New Zealand and Australian ports, 1 would like to register my opinion that we New Zealanders, wtoo are proud of being British, should not hesitate to patronise British ships whenever possible. If we give our money to foreign services we are helping to "cut our own throats." Talking; oi service, I may say of a recent trip on a British ship, that the service given to the passengers by the captain, officers, and stewards, left nothing to be desired in the way of courtesy an d attention. Of course one -ould perhaps get ultra-service on 'i Foreign ship; but we have heard that it is the avowed intention of foreign owners to endeavour to wipe British ships off the seas, and so perhaps this iltra-service is just the thia edge ot' the wedge to do so. Is it not advisable For ourselves and our country to antronise British shipping?— Yours, 2tc., E. CHOLERTON. August 10th, 1932.
