COUNTY COUNCILS

.. « WAIMAIRI. The Waiinairi County Council met last evening. Present: Crs T. O. Nownham (chairman). W. J. Walter, V. S. Scott, C. W. Moore, W. G. Chapman, (J. Gardiner, J, IjigC'ria, W. Price, and W. P. Spencer. The Electrical Sub-Committee reported that the City Council had suggested that an additional lamp be placed on the south-east corner of Marshland and Shirley roads.. This was agreed to on tho usual basis of boundary lamp charges. The Post and Telegraph Department wrote in regard to radio interference at Belfast. The matter was left to tho electrical engineer. It was decided to purchase a dozen propayment metres for use in premises considered advisablo by the county clerk and the electrical engineer. The chairman reported that he and Crs. Walter and Scott had met representatives of the City Council in connexion with the duplication of street names. A report submitted showed that there were 26 roads in the county affected, • and 11 others .with names similar to those of roads in the City and surrounding districts. Several councillors contendod that some of the roads had been so named after very old settlers, and should not be dropped. , It was left to the members for the ridings concerned to suggest alternative nameß. An invitation from the Waimairi Beach Golf Club to play a match on August 25th was accepted. The Minister for Agriculture wrote acknowledging receipt of a letter from the council expressing its attitude towards certain amendments to the Slaughtering and Inspections Act suggested by the Christchurch City Council. The Minister advised that the views of the council would receive careful consideration when the question af amending the Act was before the House. A sum of £SO was voted to the Canterbury Progress League. Jn regard to a culvert in Paparoa street, which is in a state of disrepair, it was decided to refer the matter to a sub-committee comprising . Crs. Chapman and "Walter, and the county clerk. It was decided to open the pound in Sawyers Arms road on September Ist, and the appointment of poundkeeper was left to a committee consisting of tho chairman and Crs._ Chapman and Moore. A petition signed by about. 70 relief workers was received, nsking for wages to he paid at the scene of their employment. After a discussion it was decided to adhere to the present method. The tender of W. Major. of £72 ss, the lowest, for the cleaning of Spencer's drain for a period of two years, was accepted.
