DEPUTATION TO APPROACH MR J. S. JESSEP. * ■ ___._ ,- YESTERDAY'S MEETING... ' A meeting of the Christchurc> Presbytery was held yesterday morning. The Moderator (the Be v. J. A.. Allan) presided. . . It was decided to refer to the committee the question of arranging for the various hospitals, sanatoria, and other institutions to be visited -r>y ministers. The committee will "allocate duties to both City and suburban ministers, who will do the work of visiting patients and holding services on a voluntary basis. The scheme is, however, for the present, in the nature of a» experiment. The question of obtaining . emPWment for theological students daring their vacations was brought up. .It ,was decided to commend the matter u> the consideration of moderators of vacancies and to ministers going . -«n holiday, and to- suggest to theJElome suasion Committee, that avenues of- emptor* ment be found in camps for the unemployed. It was said that at least one . student could be found employment in this way in Canterbury. Services at Unemployment Camps. The arranging of religious services and entertainments at unemployment camps was considered in a report made by the Public Questions Committee, and after some discussion, wherein it wa* stressed that the co-operation of all Churches was necessary in order to deal. with the matter effectively, and that the Soeial Council of the Churches was the body best qualified to handle the work, it was decided to refer the matter to this council. Belief Committees Suggested. It was resolved that the- Presbytery respectfully request the Government to take into consideration the advisability, of setting np committees of interested citizens in various centres, which coiid be taken fullv into the Government's ! confidence, aiid would be trusted with administrative authority in tho matters of unemployment relief. The Presbytery considered that such coinmittens could be trusted to make the wisest and most economical nasi of the funds available, while the Government's administrative resources would be augmented and a great deal of criticism inseparable from secrctiva bureaucratic control would be" eliminated. • The Bevs. T. "W, Armour and J. Lawi son Eobinson were delegated to approach Mr J. S. Jesaep, chairman of the Unemployment Board, on his visit to Christchurch, in order to discuss the question fullv with him. The report of a Presbyterial visitation to St. John's Church, Lyttelton.. was received and adopted.
