There was once a leading citizen of Sydney who believed that he got out of life all that there was in it. He had Bohemian tastes. These led to frequent depletions of an exchequer which ordinarily would have mot all his needs and left a surplus. He had a curious habit when his account was almost "out," and he knew that soon a bank accountant would have the duty of suggesting that he call to "put it in ordor," of buying a picture. In this way he accumulated a gallery. Some of the pictures proved to be valuable. The painters of Sydney wish that there were a hundred like him. "Just a bare hundred would do," declared an artist, thinking with enthusiasm of this old-time benefactor of men of the brush and palette. Artists are indeed having a lean time. Tho original Art Society—The Royal—is now mourning over its annual exhibition (wrote tho Sydney correspondent of tho Melbourne "Argus" on July 30th). Are there dozens of red tabs indicating sales? There are not even one or two. The exhibitors are painting pictures that should attract, but there is no rush for them. They havi to endure the gibe of the superior person who talks of "pretty pretties" instead of "art for art's sake." Sydney harbour provides the material for the chief picture in this exhibition. Mr Lister Lister, who always has the largest canvas, supplies one that commands approval.
