MID-CANTERBURY.

ASHBURTON. NOMINATION WITHDRAWN. By the withdrawal of the nomination of Mr G. Holmes, who was contesting the vacant seat on the High School Board of Governors, the Mayor (Mr W. H. Woods), who was the only other candidate, has been elected. The vacancy was caused by the resignation of Mr '. A. Lane. AShburton Presbytery. The,Ashburton Presbytery met yesterday, when the Moderator, the Rev. A D. Kirkland, presided. The secretary of the St. Andrew's Old Boys' Association wrote outlining a financial campaign in the interests of the college. The Presbytery decided to

givc the association permission to canvass within its bounds. Mr Kirkland said that an Evangelist mission conductod by the Eev. J. Bissett would be held in Mayfield, commencing on August 21st. A Bible class rally would be held during the first week of the mission, when an invitation would be extended to all Bible class members. The Eev. A. G. Irvine said that the celebrations in connexion with the Wakanui Church jubilee bad boon very successful. It was decided to congratulate the congregation on the attainment of the .-jubilee of the church and to commend Mr A. Davidson, home missionary, and the committee in charge of the arrangements, for their efforts m connexion with the function. Mr Irvine also stated that an Evangelist mission under the auspices of the Ashburton Ministers' Association would be held in St. Andrew's Sunday School Hall, commencing on. September 11th. Mr W. J. Mains, of Auckland, would conduct the mission. The Moderator reported that the Sunday School examinations had been very successful, some of the papers being of a very high standard. A remit from the General Assembly regarding ministers' tenure was considered, and it was decided that any alteration to the present system would not be in the best interests of the church. Prize in Lottery. It is understood that a syndicate of Ashburton residents has won a prize of £loo'in the New South Wales Government's lottery. Presentation to Hospital. The presentation of a dolls' house, completely furnished, for use . in the children's ward was mado to the Ashburton Public Hospital yesterday by Mr Val Ellen, of Staveley. Fourteen patients in the children's ward assembled to receive the gift. The house and furniture are cleverly constructed. Another Heavy Prost. Another heavy frost was recorded in Ashburton yesterday, the reading at the Domain weather station being 16 degrees. Bugby Draw. The draw, with referees, for Saturday is as follows: — Possibles v. For the present week 24 men are ieceiving relief work under the No. 5 Scheme. The allocation received amounts to £32, so that the men have to work reduced time." Thompson. RUAPUNA. There was A fair attendance at the weekly meeting of the Workers' Educational Association. A lecture on "Appreciation of Poetry," illustrated by several gramophone selections, was very much appreciated. At the fortnightly sooial in aid of the hall funds, there, was a good attendance. Competitions were won. by Miss Myrtle Lane and Mr W. Thompson. The music for dancing was axip-

plied by Messrs Bert Cloughtbn and G. Robertson. An extra was played by Mrs J>. Sewell. MOUNT SOMERS. A social and a dance were held in the library, in aid of funds for the re- ' cently formed sub-branch of the Red f Cross Society. Dance music was plied by Mesdames W. McClimont and L. M. Goodrich, and Mr W. Morgan was M.C. eiougs were contributed by Mrs Webley (Christchurch), and Highland dancing by Mrs T. Kerr. Prizes for competition were won by Miss MMorgan and Mr G. Patton, and consolation prizes were awarded Mrs C. Alexander and Mr S. McClimont. Those present at the monthly meeting of the Mount Somers School Committee were Messrs J. G. Green (chairman), W. R. Glassbn, It. McCallum, J. A. Mears, J.'T. Bull, and W. A. H. Sharpe (headmaster). It was reported that the Education Board had attended ■• to the defective chimneys. The Ashburtoriv Unemployment Relief Committee advised tnat the committee's application for tw-6 men to clear portion of the grounds for gardening purposes, had been granted, and the men would be allotted as soon as the demands for farm labour had been met. The Ashburton County Council advised that an inspection would be made of the drainage at the main entrance to the school, with a view to improvements. !
