He reported that the Waimate remit to the South Canterbury executive regarding fixed charges to farmers had been favourably received, and would be acted upon. Tho scheme of mortgage and valuation adjustment propounded by Messrs G. W. Cleland and J. C. Hay was approved for submission to the South Canterbury executive, the motioii being carried by ten votes to nine. SEADOWN. The Seadown Tennis Club held a euchre party and dance in the schoolroom. The women's prizes were won by Mrs Craythorne and Miss M. Topham, and the men 'a by Mr Leo Connolly and Mr Cain. At the monthly meeting of the Temuka branch of the Returned Sol- | diers' Association, Mr James King re- } ported that already £212 17s 6d had I been spent on a wood-cutting schema for relief for unemployed returned men. During the month a branch ot the Red Cross Bociety had been tormed in Temuka, The Dominion Headquarters advised that Temuka's application for an increased grant from the Canteen Fund would be considered by the executive. In regard to a circular from headquarters, it was decided to endeavour xo obtain a subsidy on the wood-cutting scheme. A grant of £lO was received from the South Canterbury Patriotic War Relief Society. The Management Committee of the Temuka and District Basketball Association met on Monday, Mr H. Christie presiding. Arrangements for a senior representative match against Timaru, at Temuka, were made. Tho Hilton Club wrote declining an invitation to affiliate. A cedar shield for the winners of the junior competition was delivered by Mr F. Robert*. It was decided that a letter of thanks be forwarded. Mr C. R. Orr Walker, S.M., presided over a sitting of the Magistrate's Court yesterday. Walter Baxter was fined 5s for driving a ear without a driver's license. For riding bicycles at night without lights, Hugh Brosnaban and Andrew Anderson were each fined 10s. Charged with having been on licensed premises after hours, Walter Oldfield pleaded not guilty. Jack Billings was similarly charged. He did not appear. Each was fined £!•

For riding a motor-cycle without num-ber-plates, William* Leo Angland was fined £l. Arthur Franklin Jones, charged with negligently driving a motor-car, was fined £2. On the information ot Catherine Tarrant, Jane Tarrant, and Margaret Mary Tarrant, Elizabeth Webb was charged with assault. A counter-charge of assault was laid against the Misses Tarrant and Mrs Tarrant by Elizabeth Webb. Both parties were represented by counsel. The case was a sequel to .one of assault involving some of the parties, and which had been settled some months before. Webb was placed under probation for, 12 months, Catherine Tarrant, was ordered-to come up for sentence, if ordered, at any time withm twelve months, and Jane Tarrant was ordered to com« up for sentence within six months, if called noon. The charge against Margaret Mary Tarrant was dismissed. Arising out ot the above cases, Eileen Phiskie proceeded against Elizabeth Webb for using obscene language in a publio place. She was ordered to come «P for sentence if called on within six months, and ordered to pay costs.
