SCHOLARSHIP CANDIDATES FOR 1933. CANTERBURY COLLEGE ENTRIES. At last night's meeting of the Students' Association a letter was received from the Rector of Canterbury College (Dr. James Higlit) forwarding the names of candidates for Rhodes Scholarships in 1933, which had been sent in to the Professorial Board. On Thursday next the Students' Association will conduct a ballot to indicate their preferences for the candidates and the Professorial Board may be influenced to some extent by tho results of this -when it selects two of the candidates to appear before the selection committee at Wellington. The Board received the names of four candidates: — A. H. Andrews. I. F. G. Milner. K. J. Sheen. D. j. Wilson. Following are some particulars of tho career of caoh candidate: Mr A. H. Andrews. Allan Huia Andrews was born at Okato, Taranaki, in 1912. He received his primary education &,t the Okato and Wharepoa Schools, and later attended Thames High School for two years, where he gained a Junior National Scholarship. In 1926 he went to New Plymouth Boys' High School, taking his matriculation in the same year, and a Senior National Scholarship in 1927. In 1928 and 1929 ho was awarded the City and Guilds of .London Instituto certificates in electrical engineering, grade one and grade two (continuous current), and in 1930 qualified for an" engineering bursary which he took up in 1931 at Canterbury College. Last year he passed the engineering intermediate examinations, and this year is offering Ist professional. Mr Andrews would tako engineering and mathematics at Oxford in the event of selection. In sporting activities, whoso ago is 20 years, has achieved some prominence. Ho was in the 2nd fifteen at Thames High School, and in 1928 became a member of the New Plymouth High -School fifteen, which he represented for three years, being captain in 1930. Andrews , has represented College House in football, cricket, and tennis, and "is at present captain of the house football and cricket teams. Mr I. F. O. Milner. Lan Frank George Milner was born in 1911 and educated at Waitaki Boys' High School between 1919 and 1929. He I won Junior and Senior Natipnal Scholarships and was dux of the school in 1929. In the same year he won a University National Scholarship. At school Milner played for tho first eleven for three years and was captain for two years, and was vice-captain of the school fifteen in 1929. He was a member of the shooting team for two ye&fs ana also won tho swimming and mile walk championships in 1928. Othbr school activities included debating, ih which he was leader of the school team in 1929, and the editorship of the school magazine fior three years. Milner yrna a prefect in 1928 and head prefect in 1929. At Canterbury College he is' taking tho last section of tho B.A. degree this year. In 1930 he won both impromptu and prepared speaking prizes at the Dialectic Society snd this year led the college team in the Joynt Scroll debate. He is also editor of "Cpnta" and the "ileview." At Canterbury College lib plays football for the second grade team, and in 1930 gained a place in the college cricket, team. He has represented Rolleston House at swimming &nd was placed third in the college 1500 yards championship. Mr Milner wishes to further his studies in English with a view to teaching or -university lecturing. Mr K. J. Sheen. Kei ili John Sheen was born in Gisborne in 1912 and received his primary education at ihe Gisborne Central School, where he obtained a Junior National Scholarship. For the host five years he held first place in form examinations at Gisborne High School and in 1928 was dux of the school. He passed the matriculation examination at the age of 14, gaining ih the same year a Senior National Scholarship. Before leaving school Sheen passed the first four subjects of the B.A. degree as $u external student of Auckland University College. After a year as a probationer lie was sent to tho Christchttfch Training College in 1930 for two years' training, when ho qualified for a full :B certificate, and was then selected ifor a third year of training as a specialist in modern languages. In 1930 he graduated as Bachelor of Arts and in 1931 gained first class honours in Latin language and litorature, being then aged 19 yeats 7 months. He is offering tHploma of Honours in French language and literature this year. He is vice-president of the French Club and was this year a candidate for the Students' Association executive. He also represents th 6 third year student specialists On the Training College students' executive, and is acting as senior assistant librarian at Canterbury College. At school Sheen took an active interest in football, cricket, and tennis, gaining a place in tho second eleven and being runner-up in his last year for the Poverty Bay law tennis junior singles championship. During tho past three years he has represented Training College in tennis and hockey, and besides being a member of the Canterbury College senior hockey team, was selected in 1931 as a Canterbury junior hockey representativeMr D. J. Wilson. Donald Jamieson Wilson was born in 1811, and attended the Greymouth Main School.
