FOOTBALL.

* RUGBY. ranfurly shield. * • South Canterbury's challenge match next Saturday will ■be the one hundred and seventh game for the Ranfurly Shield and Canterbury's seventeenth. This coveted trophy, which has stimulated interest in Rugby to a remarkable degree, was presented to the New Zealand Rugby Union by Lord Ranfusly, the then Governor, in 7 1902. It was allotted to Auckland, who had the best record for that year. The first actual. Shield game was played between Auckland and Wellington on August 6th, 1903, "Wellington winning by G points to 3. On August 20tli, 1904. Canterbury entered the arena for the first time in tfie second Shield game with Wellington, on Athletic Park. The Bed and Blacks on that occasion included J. Lavery, E. G. Deans, and P. Burns in the backs, and J. Roddick, W. Shannon, and F. Xewton among the forwards. For Wellington, W. J. Wallace scored two tries, and Burns one try for Canterbury. ' On divers occasions during the subsequent years, Canterbury challenged and almost lifted the trophy. It may be said that they have the best record among the major unions who did not hold the shield for long periods. When Ilawke's Bay made their sensational rise and produced a wonderful side, Canterbury were the only provincial team who could foot it with them. In the years from 1923 to 1927, Cantorbury scored forty-one points to fifty scored against them by the Bay. In the year 3920, which saw the Bay at the pinnacle of success, Wairarapa were beaten 77 to 14, Wellington 58 to 8. and Auckland 41 to 11. Then camo the historic occasion at Lancaster Park,, when, after a thrilling game, Canterbury just failed by 17 points to 15 to defeat the Bay. South Canterbury, the challengers next Saturday, havo beaten Canterbury in the last two games by 18 to 3 on Wednesday last at Timaru, and by 21 to 9 at Lancaster Park last year. They will prove a formidable team and the defenders will have to be right on their game to withstand their challenge at Lancaster Park next Saturdav.

Others were of the opinion that the scoring side had the right to refuse the kick if they desired to do so. . The chairman said that, in his opinion, there was no necessity for tho kick to be taken. Trouble had arisen recently in connexion with the match between South Canterbury and North Otago, and it was probable that the New Zealand Rugby Union would be asked for a ruling regarding the mattw. Until such time as the New Zealand Union moved in the matter, he would rule that the kick at goal after a try was optional, and not obligatory. The question was dealt with in the supplementary rulings, which stated that the kick at goal must be taken, but these rulings were only explanations, and not part of the laws themselves. A Knock-on Ruling. A number of rulings were received from the New Zealand Rugby Referees' Association, including one which stated that, in the event of n player prbpelling the ball aoross his body from hand to band, no. knock-

on or throw forward could be given, even [ if the ball had travelled in tho directiou o£ his opponent's in-goal. • • ? It must, however, be noted that the player must not lose possession of the ball. Position of Placer. • The question was raised, as-to the placer in the case of a kick at _go.il could be in front of tho ball. .The. chairman said that alt playcrSi on the kicker a Bide must remain behind the ball except the placer, who was granted « »Pf c ' al " C M P 'be from the rule, which said that all tue kicker's team, other than the be behind the ball when it is kicked.
