TDIARU. DRAMA FESTIVAL. Fewer entries have been received for this year's festival of the South Canterbury Drama League, this being due to sickness A nd the inability of country branches to attend rehearsals. Fourteen entries were received, but two were doubtful. At a meeting of the League the president, Mr C. F. Clarke, opposed the practice of having four plays each evening. After discussion it was decided to hold three plavs on the first and last nights and four on the second and "third. The definite entries are: — "Miss Marlow at Play"—The Beaders. "Waterloo'" —Geraldine Players A. "The Home Front"—South Canterburv Women 's Club. ""The Ko:id of Poplars"—Pleasant Point W.E.A. "The Actress" —The Thespians (High School Old Girls). "The Green Monkey"—The Strollers *' Shanghai''—Catholic Dramatic Club A. "The Man Who Wouldn't Go to Heaven"—Timaru W.E.A. '' Emily 's Excuse''—Geraldine Players B. "El dorado" —Catholic Dramatic Club B. "The Bride"—St. Mary's Club. ' '• Legend''—Clandeboye Readers. It was officially announced that the judge -would be Mr W. S. Wauchop. Satisfaction was expressed by members at the excellence of the plays entered. Many -were new plays, and the list of authors included names famous in the literary world. Obituary. A pioneer settler in Xew Zealand, Mr John Frederick Ericson, died at his home, le Cren street, Timaru, on Friday, at the advanced age of 90. He ■was a native of Schleswig-Holstein. He went to eea at an early age. After leaving the sea he lived in Adelaide, and later came to New Zealand, arriving on the West Coast prior to 1863, and before the great gold rush. Mr Ericson was known as "Fred the .boatman," as he used to operate the ferry across the Grey river in the days, before the Cobden bridge was dreamt of. "Fred the boatman" was intimate with the Et. Hon. Bichard J. Seddon. Lighthousekeeping was then Mr Ericson's next calling, and he held the position at Cape Foulwind, Farewell Spit, and Puysegnr Point. He was a man wrapped up in his family, and his cosmopolitan and broad outlook on life were among his chief characteristics. The funeral took place yesterday afternoon. Pluaket Society. Pellett) reported that no indication had been given of the presence of spawning rainbow trout in Lake Heron. General fishing prospects were good. Lake Alexandrina will not be open until December Ist. Subject to limitations of the size of flies, Horseshoe Lake at Seadown is to-be opened for fishing.--At the conclusion of the meeting Mr W. S. Grant, of Temuka; an ex-coun-cillor, who had attended every meeting for 10 years, was presented by Mr T. R. Mackay, on behalf of the council, with a set of photographs of himself and a Kaiapoi rug for Mrs Grant. Mr A. B. Scrimshaw returned to Wellington on Saturday. A golf match played between Hxgnfield and Temuka men's teams at Timaru on Thursday was won by Highfield bv 6J games to 4i. Results were (Highfield names mentioned first): M. Houlihan beat R. H.
