' The secretary reported that a number of the old-time competitors non-resi-dent on the West Coast, had signified their intention of being present at the jubilee in September. It was docided to invite them to participate in a debate with a team to be chosen from the club members, to take place during the Jubilee Festival. The secretary reported that the entries for the festival constituted a record for the Society, beating last year's record by nearly 100. Advice from the Dunedin Society was received that as the entries there were a record, two more days than had been set apart for the festival, would be required, entailing delay in the judges, Messrs Russell Wood (elocution), and W. 11. Dixon (music) reaching Greymouth. It was therefore decided to put the commencing date forward to Wednesday, September 7th, to endeavour to conclude the frstival on the 14th or 15th. I At the meeting of the Greymouth ' Borough Council on Thursday night, the Mayor, Mr J. W. Greenslade, presiding, considerable dissatisfaction was expressed at the-increase this year of tinlevy by tho Grey Hospital Board, which amounts to £1036 more than last year. ' The Council had hoped to relieve the ! ratepayers this year, by making a reduction in tho Borough rates, but the amount to be paid to the Hospital will j preclude this being effected, j While it was admitted that the Grey 1 Hospital was as well conducted as it eould be, the constitution of its Board did not give the. Borough, which bad to find the bulk of the Board's levy, a fair representation. It was also noted that a number of associations were able to seeure a reduction in hos' pita! charges for .their members, thus tendering it necessary for the hospital

to increase its local body rate to coyer what it lost through those reductions. It was decided to approach the Government with the request that a clause be put into operation in connexion with hospital fees whereby compensation paid to a worker under tho Compensation Act, who is a patient in an hospital shall be paid to such Hospital Board, the Board to deduct its 'dues, paying the worker the balance, ut is done under the Seaman's Act.
