RELIEF OF DISTRESS. WEEKLY REPORT. The following report on the work of , the Citizens' Belief Association for the t week is supplied by the acting-director j ia charge of the distribution:— < The number of families helped by the Citizens' Belief Association is still rising, and the highest on record was reached in the week ending Jnly 30th. A greater response through the Pound Scheme would makfr it" easier to deal with the increasing ntonbera. Tne severity of the weather this week-end has made it difficult for the Pound Scheme workers to handle the collecting. The workers have done wonderful wort under the most adverse conditions. At the present time there are a num : ber waiting for cots, single and double mattresses, linoleum, chairs, push-chairs, perambulators, and boots and clothing. "The wintry conditions now being experienced make it desirable to increase the rations and firing, if practicable. All - in a position to help are therefore exhorted not to allow this opportunity to pass of assisting those who are not in a position to purchase the necessities **> withstand the rigours of winter. The application form has been printed, and arrangements are in "hand to bring it into use at once. It is understood that ..collections are now being made in a number of the country districts to aid the association in ministering relief to those in need in the City and suburbs. t The acting-director desires to acknowledge with thanks the gifts of- money and kind from the following:—Messrs R. LAST WEEK'S MEETING. The Christchurch Women's Unemployment Committee met. on Friday. A reply to a letter from the Journalists' Association was submitted for signature and passed by the committee. Reference was made to a statement made in The Press that girls sharing a room had to make use of a common wardrobe, and it was explained that provision was made at the depot for clothing needy unemployed women and girls. The committee's report showed that there had been nine fresh registrations during the week, that four Women had been placed in employment, and that there were still 146 on the register, j The expenditure for the week amounted to £46 18s 6d, the estimated expenditure being £55. . Gifts to the cooking centre from Miss Cox, Aunty Brown, and Miss Wilding, and to the sewing centre I from Mrs Hunter, Mrs Grant, Mr Kirk, Miss Mcßeath. Mrs H. R.
