Lady Houston has written to tlic Chancollor of the Exchequer (Mr Neville Chamberlain) as follows: — "Your regrettable refusal of the £200,000 I offered to lesson the shameful cut in Great Britain's defences lias decided me to send the smaller sum of £40,000, which is the amount of income tax which would be duo if' I were domicilod in England instead of Jersey. I hope you will not be too proud to accept it." [Lady Houston's original offer was conditional on the money being earmarked for national dci'cncc expenditure, and Mr Chamberlain notified her that the Treasury was unable to accept it-] -
