SOCIAL EVENING. Mr and Mrs E. Jones, Styx Bridge, were tho host and hostess at a social evening for a number of their friends. Singing and competitions were enjoyed. The competition winners were Mrs Allington and Mr W. Burrows. Speeches congratulating the host and hostess on the occasion of their silver wedding anniversary were made. Among those present wero Mr and 'Mrs E. Jones, Mr and Mrs L. Lavender, Mr and Mrs A. Chaney, Mr and Mrs Price, Mr and Mrs Barnes, Mr and Mrs Leadbetter, Mesdaines Orbell, Munro, Allington, Lowe, McJ'arrow, Donaldson, Misses Allington (2), Doris Jones, Joan Price, Ethel Mayue, Messrs T. Mayne, J. Barnes, E. Eossiter, E. Grenfell, G. Mottram, B. Winter, E.. Price, M. Price, W. Burrows, and C. Chaney. Waimairi Tennis Club. Mr G. Eadford presided at a general meeting of the Waimairi Tennis Club at the Memorial Hall. The various committees set up to provide funds for the pavilion reported progress. The yankee tournaments showed a profit- of £3; dances £3 ss; and coin evenings £.5 4s. Thanks were expressed to Mr and Mrs. E. A. Tullett, and Mcsdames Eadford, Longley, and Agar, and Mr Eoberts for gifts of prizes. Mr W. Clark was appointed convener of the dance committee. Arrangements for top-dressiug the courts wero put in hand and the date of the annual meeting was fixed for September 6th. Old-time Social. A successful old-time social was held in St. Paul's Schoolroom on Thursday evening. Old-fashioned dresses were worn by a number of the guests, aud the old-time games, Oranges and Lemons and Nuts in May, were enjoyed. Songs were given by Miss Church and Mr and Master Tomkies, and mouth-organ solos by Master Desmond Tomkies. Mr W. A. Wilson was M.C., and Mr Barnes played tho accompaniments. St. Silas's Mother's Union. The monthly meeting of St. Silas's Mother's Union was held on Wednesday afternoon, Mrs W. H. Orbell presiding over a good attendance. An interesting address on work among the Durham miners was given by Miss Havej laar. Afternoon tea was provided by i Mcsdames Munns and Chaney. Essay Competition. | Although the subject of the essay competition conducted by the Beautifying Association was a difficult one, some of the scholars wroto very creditable compositions. Tho subject was: "In W hat V* ay Do Beautiful Surroundings Inspire and Mould tho Character!" The successful scholars were:—Waimairi School, Marjorie White 1, Norman Morgan 2; Papanui School, Daphne Butcher and Jack Brown equal. Northcote Items. The request of the Advance Northcote Association to the Waimairi County Council to bavo tho children's playground ploughed and levelled, prcparadown, has been referred to Mr W. G. Chapman to make •arrangements to havo tho work done. Ihe council is making application to the btate Advances Department for permission to allot a section for the building of a social hall. Progress League Social. The monthly social of tho Progress League was well attended. Music for J,® was supplied by Mr. E. Gates. The committee in charge comprised Messrs J. Schofield and Bonham.
