CONSTABLE'S DEATH.
ILLNESS FOLLOWING AN ACCIDENT. Constable Henry Henderson, the officer in charge of the Linwood Police Station, died at the Christ chnreh Hospital yesterday morning. He was admitted to hospital on May 26th, after an accident at the intersection of Fitzgerald avenue and Hereford street, im. which ho was knocked from his bicycle and fractured an ankle. He was oa | duty at the time. Constable Henderson was operated om | twice and he developed pneumonia, his condition rapidly becoming worse. He died from double pneumonia and phlebitis following on an operation for bone-plating a fracture of an ankle. An* inquest was opened before Mr. E I). Mosley, S.M. (Coroner), yesterday and, after evidence of identification was taken, was adjourned sine die. Constable Henderson was a veiy capable police officer, and his death is deeply regretted by members of the local force and others. He-was bean at Darsie, Fifeshire, Scotland, and was 56 years old when he died. He came to New Zealand in 1896, and for a time was engaged in farming in the Orari district. In November, 1900, he joined the police force at Wellington, and was stationed at that city, Feilding, Queenstown, and Lumsden, before coining to Christchurch. He was at the New Brighton station for some time, but -recently took charge of the Linwood district. Constable Henderson leaves a widow and eight children.
