Tho Per. J. E. Simpson, who has succeeded the Rev. J. K. Archer: as pastor of the Colombo Street Baptist Church, was welcomed by the Rev. B. M. Wilson, president of the" Canterbury Auxiliary of the Baptist Union, at the annual meeting of the auxiliary yesterday. A letter was read from the Auckland Auxiliary, paying tribute to Mr Simpson's work at Tauranga, and regretting his departure from the Auckland district. Messrs G. Martin (Napier) and J. Black (Dunedin) are staying at Warner's Hotel. Guests at the United Service Hotel include: Messrs O. G. Kember, R. M. Blackwalder (Wellington), J. M. Cnughey (Auckland), and W. McEgan (feydney). Mr A. J; Dickinson (Wellington) is staying at the Clarendon Hotel. Guests at the Royal Hotel include Messrs H. H. Kitchingham (Greymouth), and T. E. Brockie (Sydney).

Bishop Liston (Auckland) arrived in Christchurch from tho north yesterday morning.

Mr F. W. Aickin, law officer for the Railway Department, arrived in Christchurch from Wellington yesterday morning.

Mr J. McCombs, M.P., and Mr P. McSkimming, M.P., arrived from Wellington by yesterday's ferry steamer. Mr E. A. Sevier, general manager for New Zealand of the Vacuum Oil Company Proprietary, Ltd., arrived from Wellington by yesterday's ferry steamer.

Among the passengers from the north yesterday on the Maori were Mr D. Jones, chairman of the New Zealand Meat Producers' Board, and Mr G. W. Reid, a member of the Railways Board. At the annual meeting of the Waipara .County Council, held on Thursday, Mr. W, K. McAlp inc was elected chairman. Mr McAlpine has been acting-county chairman since Mr N. D. Campbell's departure for England five or six weeks ago. Wellington visitors staying at the New City Hotel include Messrs R. J. Gard, H, Burdekin, B. Angus, J. F. Allison, P. Stephens, and H. A. Goodwin.

Reference to tho death of Mr T. J. Edmonds was made last evening at the annual meeting of the Canterbury Auxiliary of the New Zealand Baptist Union by the newly-elected president of the auxiliary, the Rev. J. K. Archer, who described Mr Edmonds as a fine man who loved his City, and did a great deal for it. On Mr Archer's motion, a resolution expressing deep sympathy with Mrs Edmonds and members of the family was carried, those present standing in ?3enco. The Canterbury Auxiliary of the Baptist Union of Now Zealand, at its annual meeting yesterday, carried tho following resolution amid applause: — "That this annual meeting of the Canterbury Auxiliary of the Baptist Union of New Zealand desires to plaoe on record its appreciation of the sterling service rendered by tho Rev. J. KArcher, during his 13 years of (service in Christchurch. The years of faithful service in Elgin street, the courageous move to Colombo street, and the remarkable advance of the Church in recent years, are all achievements, fctr which we thank God. We wish, in this motion of appreciation, to associate the name of Mrs Archer, who at all times Droved a gracious and worthy helpmeet." At the afternoon session, Mr Archer was elected president of the auxiliary for the ensuing year.
