PERSONAL. (?rECIAL TO THE P8E99.) GREYMOUTH, June 2. Mr H. H. Sharpe, inspecting engineer of the Public Works, Wellington, is visiting the West Coast. Mrs R. Johnston (Auckland) is visiting her daughter, Mrs A. Warnes, Greymouth. Mr H. A. Lloyd,, who has been visiting relatives in Greymouth, returned today to Ashburton. Mr G. Collins (Wellington; is visiting Greymouth. Inspector Lopdell, who has been appointed to take charge of tho West Coast Police District in succession to Inspector Fitzpatrick, who has been transferred to Napier, arrived to-day from Wellington. Mr W. McEgan (Sydney) is visiting the West Coast. Popular Schoolmaster. ! Mr A. H. Seebeck, who had been 42 years at the Kumara school, during 26 of which he was headmaster, and who recently retired on superannuation, was entertained by the old pupils of the school and the residents of Kumara on Tuesday evening. Tho Mayor presided and there was a very large attendance. During the evening Misses Betty Walker and Betty Stewart, two of the junior school children, presented Mr Seebcck with a wallet of notes and an address, and Mrs &?cbeck with a bouquet and a brass vase. The address was read by Mr 31. R. Spiers, one of the old pupils of the school. The Mayor, Mr D. McLean (chairman of tho school committee) and Mr Ivor Steel (treasurer) spoke. Mr Seebeck acknowledged the presents and good wishes extended to him and Mrs Seebeck. Grey Defence Rifle Club. The Grey Defence Rifle Club hold its fourth competition for the Badger trophy yesterday. Rifleman C. Richardson was top scorer with 93 off the rifW, M. Garth was runner-up with 93 (heap S), and T. Garth next with 91. With two shoots to go the leaders in the competition are:—Rifleman C. Richardson oSO, G. Roberts 379. and T. Garth 378. For the championship, with two shoots to go, the leaders are:—Rifleman C. Richardson 1160 and S. Sharraan 1112. In the handicap championship tho loaders arc: —Riflemen T. Garth 1135, S. Sharman 1131, and W. Garth 1122. Plunket Society. The annual meeting of the Grey branch of the Plunket Society was held yesterday, when the Mayor (Mr J. W\ Greenslade) presided. The annual report and balance-sheet ■were approved. The election of officers for the ensuing year resulted as follows:—President, Mrs F. M. Dcnnehy; vice-presi-dents, Mesdames P.. J. McLean, J. O'Brien, Alderton, and lies; hon. treasurer, Mr E. Gillespie's Beach. Gillespie's Beach, South Wcstland, which is the scene of active beachcombing operations, and -where an up-to-dato dredging pant is to bo erected soon, is the scene of busy preparation for tlie venture. Huts aro being erected for the workmen. Electricity for -working the dredgo is to bo generated at Lake Lyttle on a plateau nearby. Some of the men at present working on the Wniho-Wehcka road are to be transferred to the roail to Gillespie's, where considerable improvement is necessary in order that tho road may bo available for taking heavy machinery to the site of the dredge. Sawmill for South Westland. Messrs Brown and Nillson are moving their sawmill from Kokatahi to Evans Creek, in South Westland, where they will commence cutting white pine, which is fnirlv plentiful in tho virgin bush there. There are also negotiations being conducted for a sawmill at Wataroa. whero .thero is an, abundance of white pine. Aeroplane Landings. To permit aeroplanes to land at Waiho and Okarito, the respective domain boards arc now busy clearing sites for the purpose. It is expected that Mr M. C. McGregor will visit the localities shortly and inspect the sites. Hut on Glacier. To facilitate mountaineering, Messrs Sullivan Bros., of Fox Glacier, Wcheka, have erected a hut on Garden overlooking the Fox Glacier. They intend to erect a hut in the vicinity of Douglas Peak, at an elevation of about 8000 feet. The hut will be handy to Pioneer Pass, and to several high climbs, and will avoid the long preliminary tramp from Chancellor hut now necessary before the higher essays.^
