TIMARU. licensing committee. The annual meeting of the Tim aru Licensing Committee was held yesterda\. Present: "Mr 0. R. Orr Walker, S.M. (chairman). and Messrs J. P. Newman, D. (Iran:. ,1. Todd, G. Hastio, arid G. Bowker. The police report .-luted that the hotel buildings were generally in a good state of repair and were well furnished. The accommodation was 'veil up to standard. and the conduct of the hotels generally was good, with the exception of those convicted for breaches or the Act. The police report referred tu the Arow' "una Hotel, stating that it liad outlived its usefulness and that in the event of lire it would be a veritable death-trap. Eleanore Gwendoline; Coombs, widow of William Morton Coombs, formerly licensee of the Arowhenua Hotel, applied on behalf of herself and coexecutors for the renewal of the license ; -i the name of the executors of the estate. The applicant was permitted to carry on till June 30th, but the application for renewal was refused, as it was not in order. The chairman said that, it might bo possible to put the application in at the adjourned annual meeting, which would be held on June Kith.

t Magistrate's Court. Before Mr C. J?. Orr Walker, S.M., in the Timaru Police Court yesterday, Cecil Thomas Cross was fine J £1 with costs 10s, for allowing cuttle to wander in Selwyn street. Stating that the case was brought as a warning to motorists, Traffic Inspector E. Ashwell proceeded against Jtobert O'Connor on a charge of driving a heavy motor vehicle at a speed in excess nf the maximum, 25 miles per hour, contrary to Section 7, Clause 1, of the amended regulations as to the use of heavy motor vehicles. O'Connor was fin.-" £l, costs 10s. Rotary Club. An address on the principles of Tree Trade was given by Mr J. E. Stevens, of Christchurch, at yesterday's luncheon of the Timaru Rotary Club. The speaker contended that tariffs and Customs crippled trade, and said that free trade made for greater friendliness between nations. Mr Stevens was accorded a vote of thanks. School Committees. The monthly meeting of the Timaru Main School Committee was held on Wednesday evening, Mr A. Carnegie presiding. The headmaster reported that the attendance for last term had averaged D 4 per cent, of the roll. The roll this term was 594, and the average attendance so far was 553. Mr Alan Dewar wrote tendering his resignation as a member of the school staff owing to his appointment to a jiosition at Wateroa School (West Coast). The resignation was accepted with regret, and it was decided that Mr Dewar's services to the school be placed on record. Mr W. J. Dickson presided at the monthly meeting of the Timaru South School Committee. The recommendation of the Board that Miss Lilian E. Davidson be appointed to the position of assistant mistress at the school was confirmed. Belief Society. The Management Comtuittee of the Timaru Central Relief Society met on Wednesday evening. Archdeacon H. W. Monaghan presiding. Mr B. L. Blodorn was unanimously re-elected chairman of the Management Committee. Archdeacon Monaghan was elected vice-president. The secretary was also empowered to act as treasurer. The secretary reported that Mr Clyde Carr, M.P., had advised that a further supply of carcases would be available. The proposed dispensing of relief by the issuing of orders through the Labour Department and the Post Office was fully discussed. It was decided that, while the Society fully approved of this principle of funds for relief being provided from taxation, it was felt that where there was a properly organised relief society, such relief could be more economically and effectively dispensed through such a society. The secretary reported that the Mayor advised that 100 cbrds of firewood were available from Cattle Valley, and that satisfactory arrangements had been made with the Eaihvay Department for railage to Timaru. The secretary reported that t'heio was only &77 in hand to see the society over this month, the minimum amount required being £3OO. A plea for reduction of tenants' rentals of Crown lands in accordance with the productive value of the properties and for legislation to effect a general revaluation of lands was in- le by a largely attended meeting of farming and business interests to the Canterbury Land Board yesterday. There was a largo assemblage of Crown tenants, who were supported by representatives of the Farmers' Union, Shcepowners' Federation, mercantile and stock firms, and banking and other business concerns. Mr W. J. Black presided. The members of the Canterbury Land Board present were Messrs W. Stewart, Commissioner of Crown Lands, chairman, D. Stowell, T. Gee, K. Henderson, and E. Macdonald,; who were accompanied by Mr H. K. Wilkinson, secretary. The three South Canterbury M.P.'s, Messrs Clyde Carr, T. D. Burnett, and J. Bitchener, were al3o present. The powers of the Board were explained by Mr Stewart. The position of farmers in the district was fully explained by the speakers. The following resolution proposed by Mr Macfarlane and seconded by Mr Cribb was 'carried unanimously:—That this meeting of Crown tenants atul businessmen respectfully urges the Co niissioner and members of the Land Board to recommend to proper quarters that rents be reduced in accordance with the productivity of the land on the present world parity of prices, and eventually on general stabilisation that a permanent reduc-

GERALDINE. Mr J. D. McKcchnie, manager oi the Geraldine branch of the Bank of New Zealand, has resumed duty after an annual holiday spent on the West Coast. Mr A. Jj. J. Shaw, of headquarters staff. Wellington, who was relieving during Mr MeKechuio's abhejiee, has left for Bulls in the Wanganui province, where lie will undertake further relieving duty.
