MOTORING

BY " ROADSTER."

"Roadster" invites articles and paragraphs of interest to motorists for this page. CARELESS PARKING. "A number of small things cause irritation to motorists and to the authorities who administer the by-laws and national regulations.'' says the Canterbury Automobile Association in its latest safety-first message to motorists. "For instance, the habit: which many drivers have of parking their cars several feet, and sometimes yards from the kerbing creates a danger for traffic by causing congestion, and those motorists who park close to the kerbing find difficulty in getting away past the wrongly parked car ahead. Then again, the failure of drivers to leave three or four feet between their car and the one in front makes for much backing and filling before a car can be driven away. "Bent wings, damaged steering, and tyres are another result of this carelessness in parking. Some motorists are quite unreasonable in their attitude towards others judged by the way they leave their cars, so that they make it impossible for other cars to be driven away. The motor inspectors are most tolerant to motorists wiio use up more road space than they need, but there is evidence that motorists are taking too many liberties with the by-law, and that state of things cannot go un very long. "Another small tiling is the habit oi parking cars too close to an intersection. Vehicles must not be left within 20ft of the building line at a comer and the white lines set down at various points are for the guidance of motorists. But whether those lines arc there or not the by-law is in existence; it is a sensible by-law and must lie known and obeyed implicitly. There must be no masking of corners.''
