RUGBY. NORTH V. SOUTH ISLANDS. REVIEW OF THE TEAMS. In the last few years the standard of play of the North and South Island Rugby teams • has been so high and oven that the keenest interest is being taken in to-morrow's clash, which is to take plaee at Lancaster Park. Of tho four last matches two have been won by the South Island, one by tho North Island, and one has been drawn. The South Island has scored an aggregate of 86 points and the North Island a total of 93 points in those games. On recent performances, therefore, there 1 should be little difference between tho i sides. | South Island Side. A powerful forward side will represent the South Island, tho heaviest man being Max, of Nelson, who has already shown his worth in big matches, and he is said to bo jjlaying splendidly this season, Two other heavy men are Purdue and Metcalf, both oC Southland, who should provide plenty of dash in the vanguard and distinguish themselves in the line-out, besides Avhich they are good men in the tight play. Another first-class man in line-out work is Manchester, of Canterbury, who is one of the most dashing forwards in the Dominion at present. Full of resource, too, is Andrews, also of this province, his performances last season and this season so far as it has gone, stamping him -as an outstanding man. Cottrell, Lucy, and Hore, the two latter being from Otago, make up a pack from which great things arc expected. Sound Backs. The South Island backs should also give "a good account of themselves. One of the most dependable of full-backs, Connolly, of South Canterbury, inspires confidence, while Ilart, Holder, and Proctor in the three-quarter line possess speed and initiative. If they get a fair share of the ball from the inside backs they should give a bright display. Day and Oliver, tho Merivalc five-eighths, will have tho advantage over their opposing backs in that they will bring on to the field a perfect understanding of each other's pla}', gained from many club games together. If Simon can be depended on to pass tho ball out from the scrum to them with tho necessary alacrity, some splendid play might be expected from them. North Island Side. Several surprises have been sprung by tho selector of the North Island team and many names which have been familiar within recent seasons are missing from the side. A. N. Finlayson (Auckland) has taken tho place of his better-known brother in the team, and if he is as good as the latter was in the many games in which he represented th 6 AH Blacks lie should command respect. Palmer, of Auckland, is described as being a fair typo of front row man, but Jcssep, of Wellington, is looked upon aa the best forward in the Capital City next to McLean, who is one of tho finest produced in Wellington within recent years. The two Hawke's Bay men, Batherley, an ex-Auckland player, and Steere, are reported to bo outstanding in their district this season. R. Clarke is a good forward from Taranaki, and Solomon, of Auckland, will be known mostly because, of his sound work in the past as a wing-forward. The pack is regarded as being a very solid one and tho meeting of the two vanguards should be worth going far to see. Some of the names of tho North Island backs will bo unfamiliar to a great number of South Islanders, but as they have displaced good men it may be taken for granted that they are, worthy of inclusion in the side. Collins, of Taranaki, has the reputation of being a good custodian, although there is some difference o.f opinion in tho North Island as to whether ho is the best man available. Ball, the Wellington flyer, has not had many opportunities this season of showing how good ho is, but there is confidence in him that he will do well in good company. The centre three-quartor, Caughey, of Auckland, is regarded in tho northern city to be rather fortunate in boing selected on this season's form, but, like Ball, ho should show hp to advantage in tho right company. Bullock-Douglas, of Wanganui, played towards the end of last season's Inter-Island match but ho will have to be a much improved player to justify his inclusion on the present occasion. Ho is fast and well aet up. Wellington critics state that Lilburne's play this season so far has not been up to the standard of interIsland Kugby. Ho has developed tho bad habit of standing flat-footed and he runs with a lateral inclination. Hp has done'so well in other big fixtures, however, that it is hard to imagine hi™ letting his side down. H. R. Pollock, of Wellington, who replaced Farmer, of the Bay of Plenty, has many admirers and is expected to justify the confidence reposed in him. Kilby's form this season is said to be so far ahead of that of Corner that his selection was a foregone conclusion.

LIST OF PAST GAMES. MAJORITY WON BY NORTH. Since the inter-Island matches were commenced in 1897, 26 games have been played, of which fourteen have been won by the North Island, nine by tlio South Island, and three have been drawn. It was officially announced last night that the Canterbury men in tho South Island side, including G. D. Innes, first emergency for the backs, will not play in club football to-day. That will mean that Merivale will be without C. Oliver and G. Day, Christchurch without G. Hart, J. Manchester, and A. I. Cottrell, and Sydenham without Innes.

WELLINGTON UNION. INJURED PLAYERS' FUND. (FRX33 i?SOCU?IO* TXLfQJtAV.) WELLINGTON, June 2. Negotiations have been completed by tlio Management Committee iof the Wellington ltugby Union lor injured players to bo treated at Lewisham Hospital instead of Wellington Public Hospital as formerly. This is the outcome of the decision of the Hospital lioard to adhere to its 'resolution to charge full maintenance rates. It was reported that the Board advised the Union that it insisted upon payment of four guineas a week plus the full charge for X-ray examination and massage treatment. Although provision has been made for a reduced scale of charges, it is slightly higher than that which obtained previously at the Public Hospital. A meeting of Union delegates last evening confirmed the new arrangement. The meeting also adopted the Union's proposal that its payments made to players laid up us a result of injuries should be reduced in the cabo of senior, junior, anil third grade players from 30s to 20s per week, and in the case of players in lower grades from 10s to 7s 6d per week. ASSOCIATION. , SENIOR MATCHES TO BE POSTPONED. \ : 4 The Management Committee of the Canterbury Football Association decided last evening, at a special meeting presided over by Mr George Dickinson, that no Senior A competition matches should be played to-morrow afternoon. The senior matches set for tomorrow will be played as friendly games; This decision was arrived at following strong representations from the Thistle Club,- who, with six of their men playing for Canterbury against the West Coast, would be able to field only a greatly weakened team, and ffom the Western Club, who expressed a desire not to meet the leading team under such circumstances.

In explaining the position that had arisen, Mr Dickinson said that Thistle would actually have seven men absent on Saturday, as one other man, apart from the representatives, would be unable to turn out. The Association had adopted the Match Committee's report, which provided for the playing of the senior competition match between Thistle and Western to-morrow. There was no great necessity for the match to be played, and he favoured its postponement. "A deputation from the Western Club waited upon me to-day, expressing sentiments very creditable to them as a club," continued Mr Dickinson. "Western do not want to play this match, because they feel that' if they win, as they probably would, it would be under circumstances that reflected no merit upon themselves. Western are keen to win tho competition, and'feel that they hare a fchance of doing so, but they

do not want to gain, tfero points by basting a teapi that is not representative of the Thistle Club. I can only #ay that X agree fully with them."' Mr A. .W. Sellers said that- «he Objected to one team , being sloped out , for such a favour. . He advocated the postponement of all senior'matchdc. Mr O'Brien:, With the North ▼. South Island Bugby match at T«nca»i:aiPark we are likely to lose; ai certain amount of support from English Park. : There are amplo Saturdays left for the completion of the Association's Schedule of matches. Mr Bickinssn pointed ont that' with the representative match against Qtago on' Juno 11th the same position'might ' conceivably arise. A member remarked that it was most" exceptional for one team to gain: as * many places as Thistle had in a repre- " sentative side. The nest representative team might be very different in per- . oonneL . Mr.W. Morley moved, and Mr. 'W. - Waddell seconded, that all matches lie ; playfid bnt the senior game* between Thistle and Western. • Mr Sellers moved : as ■an amendment, ■ and Mr P. Wade seconded, that ao Senior A competition matches be played to-morrow, bnt that the teams drawn to meet each other should engage in' ' friendly games. The amendment was carried by a substantial majority. . . •Mr E.. Thompson, a member of a deputation fr6m the Thistle Club, when informed of the comniitteefs decision,; said that he wished to 'deny certain rnmours that had gone around in connex-' ion with the matches ' to-morrow. The ■■■ executive of his club had, at no «mn considered the, withdrawal of iheir inemhers from the representative tpam l He particularly desired to thank the West- - ern Glub for their sporting attitude in the matter.
