Rawhiti, at Charteris Bay. NOTES OF THE DAY. [By Flagstick.] -The Tain that fell last week had a. very beneficial effect on all the local courses and despite the rather wintry conditions that prevailed at the weekend several players in various clubs registered scores that have caused their club handicappers'to get to work. At Hagley,, in the first qualifying round for the Meares Cup, nine players in the seniors returned net scores below the par of the course, A. Nettleton 75, C. H. Johnstone 76, M. Foley 76, and J. "Wyn Irwin 77, registering the best gross scores. In the juniors C. Buchanan, B. A. Summers, and E. E, Bailey, with scores of 87, 88, and 89 gross, will probably have their handicaps reduced. At Harewood, J. S. Wilson (9j and N. S. Wyber (13) tied with a score of 73 net, a good performance on the day. . The leading players in the Tosswill Cup competition at the Bussley Club after the third round are:—J. P. Tipping 232, B. B. Dagger 233, J. Earl 233, F. Bi Self 234, J. Binstead 235, F. C. Fairclough 239; W. B. Teape 241, L. E. Bobinson 243, H. A. Penn 243, H. L. Blamires 244j arid A. E. Ackrbyd 244. . tr : '\3j^jsmentin'gorfc the team.-to represent r ;Mw Zealand in the . matches in Sydney, a writer in a northern paper says: " Wanganui Collegiate School should be delighted with the selection of~B. M. Silk and J. Hornabrook. Both youths started playing gplf at the course attached to the sihool." So that Silk began his golf at tie right age. At Rawhiti last week-end good rounds were recorded by V. Jensen and H. Throp, who finished 2 up and 1 up respectively on bogey, both showing greatly improved form. The handicapper has ho doubt taken note of their scores.

Following his ustial holiday course, J [Veteran H. B. Lusk has been happily and healthily occupied in defending his well-earned golf reputation against tho assaults of his many elubmates and friends in Christchurch. While much of his stay has been spent at Shirley his enthusiastic interest in the game has led him to visit other Christchurch courses. On Monday last he played a round at Avondale with thd captain and secretary of that cluby in which game "Flagstick" made up the "four." While a. 'most enjoyable game resulted, Lusk showed much interest in . the progress and development of-the course, which he has Jceenly followed when visiting ChristcKureh, since the adoption of a : comprehensive reconstruction and bunI kering scheme laid down by C. H. Red- | head. The Avondale course, he contends, as he has done on previous occasions, is highly favoured by its natural suitability to the requirements of the game, and his expressions of approval regarding the manner in which the work (now near completion) has been carried out must be highly gratifying to tho Club's Greens Committee. The condition and putting surfaces of the greens, he considered, left little to criticise, and it would be hard to find better in the Dominion.

The secretary of the New Zealand Golf Association has just received advice from the Eoyal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews of a decision made subsequent,.to the publication of tho Book of Decisions 1909-1928. The latest decision is as follows: — South African Golf tJnion—ls it legal to stand at the hole and rais'e and continue to hold the flag-stick in the air at a blind hole, so that the player may see the flag when making his approach shot? AnswerI—When 1 —When playing from a part of the course, from which the hole cannot be seen, a player is entitled to have the flag held up at the hole whilst he plays his stroke. Dazzling Raiment. Perhaps with the idea of dazzling competitors, T. H. Cotton's—the young British professional—contribution to brighter golf at Moortown was a rose-pink pullover, silvergrey trousers, a blue cowboy scarf with yellow spots, black and white shoes, and an old brown hat, worn as a mascot.
