ASHBURTON. ! UNEMPLOYMENT COMMITTEE. The executive of the Ashburton Unemployment Committee met yesterday, when the Deputy-Mayor (Mr E. Kerr) presided. A deputation from the Ashburton Unemployed Workers' Committee, consisting of Messrs W. 8. Wood and G. A. Furby, waited on the committee to place the position of the Ashburton unemployed beforo them. Mr Wood said that as the allocation •was at present, a three-day man was expected to provide for .his family at Sd a meaL He thought it was absolutely necessary to demand larger allocations. The chairman said that the committee had protested several times to the, . Board. The secretary (Mr W. Patterson) stated that 293 men would be available for work in the Ashburton, Hinds, and Mayfield districts next week. The amount required was £5Bl 14s 6d and the allocation was £442 16s. It was decided to give the two-day men, one day; the three-day men, two davs; and the four-day men, three days, and to distribute the balance among the most necessitous cases. Ten applications under the .No. 4a Scheme wero granted. • Forty-five applications, which required further investigation, were considered.' Thirtv-ono were granted, four ( wore granted on No. 4a Scheme only, one granted for two days' work only, one granted, to be revised in six , months, five declined, two held over for further inquiries, and one stood down for four weeks. Motor CluD Disbands. At a special meeting of members of the Mid-Canterbury Motor Club held on Wednesday evening, over which Mr \u. J. Harrow presided, it was decided to •disband. ~ Mr Harrow expressed regret that tne club had reached the stage when it appeared impossible to carry on. The motion to disband, was then moved by Mr A. Hawker, seconded by Mr F. Or. Cambridge, and carried. It was agreed that the club's credit | balance should be handed to the Citizens' Belief Fund. It was agreed that a quantity of cluß material should be handed over to the Ashburton Motor-Cycle Club. Hakatere Lodge. Tho HakateTe Lodge No. OS, I-0.0.F-, met on Wednesday evening, when IN.G. Bro. L. Aitken presided. A motion of sympathy was passed with the relatives of Bro. J. Andrews, of Temuka. Two candidates were initiated. The syllabus committee was appointed to draw np a programme for tho next twelve months.
