HECTOR MEDAL.
AWARD BY NEW ZEALAND INSTITUTE.
MEETING OF BOARD OF ' GOVERNORS. (VEBSS ABSOCUTIOK TXLSQBAM.) WELLINGTON, May 19. Among the many matters dealt with at tho meeting of the Board of Governors of the New Zealand Institute today was daylight saving, arising from the question of finally formulating the terms of the deed of declaration of trust in connexion with the award of the Sidey Memorial Medal. The Hon. Sir Thomas Sidey" MLC who was present, said that there was a latitude in the regulations which would enable the changing times to be J met The award was to be made in respect of light radiations, but this could bo extended to include radiations of all kinds. There was discretionary power and the award could later on go beyond New-Zealand and become international, Messrs G. E. Archey (Auckland) and Bigg (Nelson) were elected fellows. Mr F. Chapman, of Melbourne Museum, was elected an honorary member. It was announced that the recipient of tho Hector. Medal would bo Dr. Peter Buck (Te Rangi Hiroa). It was announced that the Carnegie Corporation of New York had granted 1000 dollars towards the Institute's publication expenses. It was decided, after a keon discussion, that.the present election to the Fellowship was not satisfactory, and should be "abolished. In future nominations are to be made annually by incorporated societies, but that nominees should not be informed of their nomination. The nominations are to be submitted to a spocial committee which shall recommend to tho Board of Governors those who should bo invited to accept a Fellowship. Research Council. i The formation of a National Research Council was decided on. As' the nucleus of the Council yie Institute will appoint five men who must bo of recognised scientific attainments, and thoroughly representative of tho basic sciences. The committee was empowered to frame regulations as to the period of ofiice and other matters having to do with the constitution of the Council, the committee then to proceed at once or from time to time to co-opt other members to the Council provided that the total number does not exceed 50. Officers wero elected as follows— President, Professor H. W. Segar (Auckland); vice-president, Mr B. C. Aston (Wellington); treasurer, Mr M. A. Eliott (Palmerston North); editor and librarian, Professor D. M. Y. Sommerville (Wellington); representative on Now Zealand Institute of Horticulture, Mr B. C. Aston; representative on Great Barrier Reef Committee, Mr W. R. B. Oliver (Wellington). ,
