THE NURSE MAUDE * ASSOCIATION.

REPORT ON YEAR'S WORK. The work of the Nurse Maude Association for district nursing for the past year is reviewed in the annual report, ' to be presented at the annual meeting on May 25th. The statement of receipts and expenditure shows receipts as £2184 9s 6d, and expenditure as £2044 8s sd, of which £IB7B 18s lOd was for salaries. Bequests for the year included £IOO from Miss E. H. Menzies, £IOO and a section with a two-roomed shack in Jubilee avenue, New Brighton, from Mr C. B. Dykes. . Owing to the depression, the North Canterbury Hospital Board reduced the Association's grant from £4OO to £3OO, but fortunately a num- i ber of ladies organised a bridge party to make up the deficiency, with wonderful success. In February, 1932, the tablet to the memory of Lady Rhodes was unveiled 1 in the rooms by Dr. W. Irving. It was J through the efforts of Lady Rhodes and j Nurse Maude that the Association was i brought into being in 1896. j Nurse, Maude's Report. ' v Tlie last year has been very distressing on account of increased poverty, many coming to us with small complaints due to insufficient nourishment," states Nurse Maude in her Teport. ''There are quite a number of patients who come to the office for minor dressings, which must relieve to a certain extent the Outpatients' Department of the Hospital, and must be a great boon to people'living in tho eastern portion of the City. > "Old people with the ailments of their ago are always with us, and many difficulties arise as to where to place them. Old age is most pathetic when there are no children to take responsibility, for an institution cannot take the place of their own home, "good as it may be. "There is one very serious problem that we are faced with. Many are having their teeth extracted owing to decay beyond repair, or pyorrhoea.- The Hospital extracts free of charge, but it is another matter to get new sets. The cheapest is about £5, and that is a hopeless outlook for many. It means impairment of health, chronic indigestion, and may lead to' further serious trouble. We have been able in a few exceptions to help people, but that is only a drop in the ocean. Assistance from All Sides. "This year we have been greatly helped, with gifts of everything, by friends from all over Canterbury. We are having weekly sales of clothing, which are well patronised by mriny mothers, who can buy at a very small cost. Things to be given away are carefully put away for that purpose. We have many requests for baby clothes, and we should be grateful if some of our friends would make up long or short clothes; babies coming into the world at this time of the year will have a chilly reception." Nurse Maude concludes by thanking those who have assisted in the work of distributing cooked food daily, and those who have given clothing, crockery, furniture, and bedding. The thanks of the Association are also given to all who have assisted it in any way. CLOTHING FOR UNEMPLOYED. MAYORS MEETING OF LADIES. Sullivan, M.P.), at tho request of the St. John Ambulance Ladies Auxiliary, is tcf be held for tho purpose of arranging for helpers to collect clothing for the unemployed. The St. John Ambulance Ladies' Auxiliary has undertaken to assist the Mayor and the Central Relief Depot by collecting clothing.
