ASHBURTON. ST. STEPHEN'S CHURCH. At a meeting of the vestry of St. Stephen 's Church held on Tuesday evening it vas reported that a rally of the youth i if the Mid-Canterbury District would ! held in the Parish ITall, Ashburton. jn June 4th, followed by a service in ! St. Stephen's Church on Sunday, June ■ sth. Messrs E. C. Bathurst, L. A. ' Charles, and F. Curtis, and Dr. N. E. H. Fulton were appointed a sub-conimittee to go into the matter of improving the lighting of the church. Tho following 1 church officers have been appointed:— Parochial nominators, Messrs E. C. Bathurst, L. A. Charles, W. P. Childs, ■ and W. H. Amos; district representatives: Fairton, Mr J. T. Oram; Greenstreet, Messrs G. Harris and M. Hunt; Seaficld, Mr M. Alington. Literary and Social Club. Mr S. M. Cassidy presided over a good attendance at the weekly meeting of the St. Stephen's Literary and Social Club, when k debate was held, the subject being "Is tho Cutting of Wages True Economy." The speakers for the affirmative were Messrs M. Lees (leader), C. Childs, and the Rev. J. C. A. _ Zimmerman, and for the negative Messrs If. Mcllraith (leader), J. Hamilton, and S. M. Oassidy. In announcing that, the ' negative speakers were the winners by a small margin, the judge, Mr R. H. Big gar, complimented the younger speakers , on the noticeable improvement madesince last year. Temperance Union. A special meeting of the Ashburton branch of the Women's Christian Temperance Union was held on Tuesday afternoon, when Mrs W. 11. Robinson (District President) presided. It was decided to >vrite to the South Canterbury executive, notifying them that the Union was of opinion that it would be inadvisable to forgo holding' tho annual District Convention in Sep teniber. Mrs Robinson referred to the honouring of Peace Day by unions i throughout the Dominion, and the work of the Disarmament Conference in their efforts to establish national peace and prosperity. A solo was contributed. I»v Miss L. Tucker. Tho Rev. G. B. Hinton, tho speaker for the afternoon, delivered an address on alcohol. Motor-Cycling. The committee of the Ashburton | Motor-Cycle Club met on Tuesday evtjn- j i. g, the president, Mr G. T„ Clarke, j presiding. : The organiser of the trial, Mr W. J. j Dalley, reported as follows:—The trial I had to be abandoned at Albury owing ' to an accident to a travelling marshal and to the fact that all the riders were over an hour late leaving the Mackenzib Pass. He regretted that riders were ; sent through tho pass, but that was due to his being misinformed at lunch time I as to tho state' of the pass. He congratulated all the riders that eventually went through on their splendid per-j formance. A recommendation from the riders that all thoso arriving at Albury be j given a trophy as a memento of the j trial was carried. Votes of thanks to 1 Mrs D. Leishmau (Burke's Pass) and ; Messrs C. J. McGowan for trophies were carried. , Conditions of the expert motor-cyclist reliability trial to bo held from Christchurch on May 28th were received and distributed to members. Funeral. The funeral of Mr George Tulloch took place at the Ashburton Cemetery; yesterday morning. The service at the house and the graveside was conducted by the Rev. A. G. Irvine, while Mr W. J. Brown, chaplain of tho Loyal Orange Lodge, conducted a short service at the grave on behalf of tho Lodge, of which Mr Tulloch was a member. The pall-bearers were Messrs T. E. Watt and W. G. McDonald, representing St. Andrew's Church and Sunday School, and Messrs J. Mclntyre, D." Keir, James Bruce, and George Church, of the Royal Black Preceptor and Loyal Orange Lodges. An interesting demonstration on basket-making was given by Mrs W. Thomas. • During the afternoon songs were contributed by Mesdames E. M. Gabites and E. G. Craighead, a piano solo by Miss D.
