The oldest horse race in England is that of Kiplingcotes—lately run over a four-mile course on the Yorkshire Wolds near Market Weighton. Inaugurated in 1519, the race is run annually the third Thursday.in March. The course, which is reputed to have been used for racing in the reign of Richard 111., passes through the parishes of Eton Lund, Goodmaniiam, and Middleton-on-the-Wolds, and finishes at a point above Londesborough Wold. The prize money, which amounts to about £B, is derived from a sum invested in Consols.
