EGG LAYING.

UTILITY POULTRY CLUB'S TEST. RESULTS ANNOUNCED. Following arc the results of the ISew Zealand Utlity Poultry Club's 27th annual competition, held at Papanui. Christchurch. The competition commenced on April sth, 1931, and concluded on March 27th, 1932 (a period of 51 weeks). In Test No. 1, the J. H. Shaw Memorial Challenge Test, for light and heavy breeds,' each to be single pen tested, 24 birds competed. In Test No. 2, each competitor to enter three White Leghorn pullets, to be single pen tested, 103 birds were entered. Iu Test No. 3, for Black Orpingtons, three bird single pen test, 21 birds competed. In Test No. 4, i'or any other variety of light or heavy breeds other than White Leghorns or Black Orpingtons, three-bird single pen test, 21 birds competed. In Test No. 5, for flock teams of six birds, light or heavy breeds, 11 teams competed. In Test No. 6, for three purebred ducks to be single-pen tested, -1 teams competed. In Test No. 7, for three purebred ducks to be single-pen tested, i teams competed. A total of 3d3 birds took part in the competition. All birds were inspected on entering the competition by tho Government poultry instructors, Messrs F. C. Brown and C. Cusscn, and any specimens of tho breed entered, with uudesirablo breed points, or any bird suffering from a disease, or which in the opinion of the judges is not a fair specimen of the breed, was returned to its owner and replaced during the fir<st week of the competition. No competitor'b bird i* eligible for any priz« money, or the performance recognised in any form whatever by tho club, whose eggs do not average 240z or more to tho down for hens, and 260z or more to the dozen for ducks, from April 26th, 1931, to March 27th, 1932. The competitions are decided by tho number of eggs laid, subject to the above conditions. All eggs arc kept separate and weighed weekly. All birds were judged as exhibition specimens in June, September, and February. The week's eggs from each pen are judged at the same time for shape, colour, texture, and weight. Prizes are awarded for the above judging and the Studholme Contest, Liggins Leghorn Shield, Orpington and Duck Shields are awarded on the number of eggs and points scored for quality of eggs and as exhibition' specimens.

Government Support. The competition is supported by the Government, and is ono of! the best tests of its kind in the world. Competitors from all parts of tho Dominion regularly compete, and tho world's records put. up prove that tho object to increase the general average and size of eggs, is being achieved. The winter test is awarded to the competitor's birds in each test laying the greatest number of eggs between April sth, 1931, and July 28th, 1931 (inclusive). The autumn test is awarded to the competitor's bird or birds in each test laying the greatest iiumber of eggs between January Ist, 1932, and March 27th, 1932 (inclusive). Standard certificates were issued as follows: —Single Bird Tests, White Leghorns 270, any other variety light breeds 260, ducks 300, heavy breeds 260 eggs; light breed flock teams of six pullets 1400 or more; flock teams of six gullets 1350 eggs or more; three-bird standard 720 eggs, or more; three-ducks 800 eggs or more. Eggs must be standard weight to be. eligible for a certificate. The club awards certificates of merit as follows: For White Leghorns laying from 240 to 270 eggs. For any other variety of fowl laying from 220 to 200 eggs. For Indian Runner ducks laying from 270 to 300 eggs. For any other variety of duck laying from 250 to 270 eggs.
