ADDINGTON MARKET.

WEDNESDAY'S SALE The best feature about Wednesday's store sheep sale was the consistently good demand for serviceable soundmouthed ewes. It is true that prices did not show much advance, if any, but the free disposal created a better atmosphere. Many consignments were from a distance, showing signs of travel, and these did not meet with the same demand, and for the higher priced young sheep competition was restricted. It was apparent from the sale that ewes are still wanted in fair numbers. The lack of feed doubtless has delayed purchases until as late as possible in many cases. Store lambs showed a slight improvement for classes that could be finished off, a cause being the advance in the export schedule, but there was a big showing of small and backward lambs that will have to be carried over. For these the demand was slack. Some attractive ewe lambs were in demand. The following is a comparison of the prices in the store pens between Wednesday's sale and the corresponding one of twelve months ago:— April Bth, April 12th _ , 1931. 1932. Lambs— s. s. s. s. The "tail" was heavy, but the export trade has less scope for selection this year. Comparisons : Ex. prims .. to 181 to 24 Prime .. 153 to 17 171 to 181 Medium .. 141 to 151 134 to 17 . The heavy sheep sold at a slight easing, but good medium weights were in demand, and sold throughout at opening rates. About 25 per cent, of Wednesday's entry of fat cattle could be described as prime, another 25 as average and the other half as stores. The grading was no better than the preceding week. Apparently it is forgotten that there is a section over the rails for store cattle. Butchers that buy this class of stuff should have to go there for it, and on the other hand legitimate beef fatteners should not have their market spoiled by the pens being flooded with sadlooking old cows. The market on Wednesday was quite fair for the small proportion of good \beef, but back again for the inferior stuff. "If yon were given 100 acres to-raorrow," he continued, addressing several members, "you would not be able to make a living by running either sheep or cattle."
