AUCTIONS. H. MATSON AND CO. 'KEEP UP STANDARD" IS THE WARNING. TOO LIGHT. BAD FOR EXPORT. From time to time sectional interest* advocate the lowering of the minimum lamb standards lor export from Australia and New Zealand. "Country Lile" has always emphasised the attendant dangers. Mr E. P. Allen, Federal Department of Marketing Chief Veterinary Officer, in his latest report from London, re-echoes the warning. Mr Allen says, however, that special consignments, especially marked, might in particular cases be permitted. His report is as follows: "I have been requested to refer to the shipment of very light or poor quality lambs. If not a regulation, it is a rule that Australian lambs under 'a minimum weight are not permitted to be exported, and it is conADDINGTON MARKET. Forward to H. MATSON and CO. PERSONAL AND DIRECT SERVICE. aidcred by some in the trade that this imposes an unnecessarily hard condition. "I do not like to recommend the shipment of lambs Of inferior quality, and with the -exception of a small proportion of unusually small but well-shaped and proportioned carcases, extremely light lambs can only be regarded as of Inferior quality, but there is undoubtedly a market for this type of lamb, particularly in such centres as Cardiff .and Manchester, and advantage is being taken of it by South American shippers. "I/have seen on Smithfield some "Artigas' lambs (Morris and Co., Uruguay), which weighed as little as 01b. Cartainly these were seized, and condemned, but I gathered that fheir seizure occasioned some surprise as it - was remarked that they sold like "hot cakes" at other centres, and I cannot imagine any colonial shipper being desirous of shipping carcases such as these. "I enquired of Colonel Young, the Chief -Inspector, whether he thought it - advisable 'to recommend the shipment of light carcases to Cardiff, Liverpool, and Manchester, and his r%ply was to the effect that so long as the carcases .show no signs of emaciation or hydnemia, he would not advise against their shipment to any centre where there was a .market for them. .. ''Colonel Young added that he has found ■ -the. best.method of arriving at any estimate of emaciation*is to thaw some carcases and to break them up. So long as the" fat (if there is any) or other intermuscular tissue is firm and there la-no gelatinous, substance present it can be taken that the inspecting authori--tioa .will be satisfied. CARE IS VITAL. "The "matter is one in. which I think shippers'might be guided by their agents who. I think, would be less embarrassed by the shipment of .such lambs than that of summer lambs. And in view of the fact that the De- '. partment of Markets could demand guarantees, .. ii"stfeh. are thought necessary, as to the destination of such lambs, the matter should '•'receiw every consideration. I would not sugjest -lowering twisting standards, which in some, instances I think .are still too low, but if as is ctaimed, there is a market at , certain centres for a particular Ipw type of lamb, 1 do not think it would be inadvisable to "permit, the shipment of Such. It could, be regarded as a special grade for * particular market,, and it could be distinctively marked as such in the same manner as Eastern and Continental grades." SOLIDIFIED MOLASSES.
