BOROUGH COUNCILS

TEMUKA. The Temuka Borough Council held its monthly meeting on Wednesday. Present: The Mayor (Mr A. \Y. Buzan), Crs. J. Gourlay, F. C. May, W. H. McMillan, A. R. Beck, W. F. Evans, G. Hancox, E. Blackmore, and A. E. Smith. A vote of sympathy with the relatives of Mrs A. King was passed. The chairman, Mackenzie County invited the local bodies of South Canterbury to attend a conference in the Lovels County Council office to-morrow, for the purpose of discussing the more uniform control of unemployment in South Canterbury, and the unemployment problem in general. The Mayor was appointed as representative of the Tomuka borough. The South Canterbury branch of the Society for the prevention of Cruelty to Animals wroto asking! for permission for Mr 11. Ashwcll, traffic inspector to the highways group, to act as an honorary ranger. Mr Ashwell, who was present at the meeting, explained that he had seep several instances of cruelty and had expressed his willingness to act. It was decided to recommend to the Mackenzie traffic group that Mr Ashwell be allowed to act as a ranger. The Secretary, Temuka Returned Soldiers' Association, wrote asking for permission to sell poppies in the streets on two days in tho near future. The Mayor said it was customary for a sub-committee from the Council to meet representatives of the Returned Soldiers' Association to make arrangements for the celebration of Anzac Day. Permission to sell poppies was granted, and the Council executive was appointed to meet the Returned Soldiers' Association to mako arrangements. Ensign W. Knight, of the Salvation Army, wroto asking for permission to erect a platform for the official reception to General Higgins on March 30th.—Permission was granted. The Finance Committee reported t}iat the pay-sheet of the District Fund Account totalled £1059 17s 3jl. Receipts for the month totalled £1974 12s Cd, and there was a debit balance of n420 8s 0(1. The chairman of the committee (Mr A. E. Smith) reported that rates totalling £478 were still outstanding.
