Mrs W. G. Butlierford (Pajmerston North) is visiting her mother, Mrs W. J. Mitchell, Kugby street, for her sister's wedding, which takes place next week.

Miss Marie Bremner, the popular star of the J. C. Williamson Company, which is at present enjoying a most successful season at the Theatre Royal, will be the guest of honour at a reception to be held at the Y.W.C.A. this afternoon, from 5.30 to (3.30. Mrs Edward Parkerson and Miss Nell Parkerson gave a charming "gift" afternoon party at their home, Park terrace, in aid of All Nations Fair. Many beautiful gifts were brought by the guests, and some were sold during the afternoon.

Mrs Laurie Wilson, who has been spending some months in loft last night on the first stage of her return journey to England.

Mrs G. Frengley and Miss Maureen Frengley (Weston road) left Christchurch last night en route for England and Ireland.

Mr and Mrs W. Tooniev returned yesterday from a visit to Greymoutli. Miss Lilian Harper, who has been on a short visit to Timaru, has returned to Christchurch.

* The engagement is announced of Jean, only daughter of Mr and Mrs W. Ellen, "Willowdene," Templeton, to Frederick George, only son of Mr and Mrs F. Kolkman, Willow Bank, Halswell. Miss Emily Graham (Cambridgo terrace) is leaving early next week for Auckland en route to Cairns, Queensland, where her marriage to Mr S. W. Newnan will take place early in April. Miss Graham, whose new home will be on Thursday Island, is the youngest daughter of tho late Mr W. H. Graham, formerly Associate Editor of The P RFSS.

Tributes to tlio valuable work done by Miss A. D. Hughes, assistant secretary to the Canterbury A. and P. Association, were paid by Messrs L. R. C. Macfarlane, retiring president, and W. J. Jenkins (president) at the annual meeting of the Association last night, and a resolution was carried electing her an honorary life member. An exhibition of art craft, including metal work, needlework, marquetry, etc., will bo held by Miss Buckhurst and her students at Miss Buckhurst's home, 3S Casliel street west, on Tuesday afternoon and, evening. No admission fee will be charged, but a small collection will be taken up, and proceeds will be devoted to the All Nations Fair. The exhibition will be opened at 3 p.m. The death took place at the Patea Hospital this week of Mrs Ida Evelyn Bow, wife of Mr L. F. Row, of Patea, County Engineer. During- the ! two years she had been in Patea Mrs Row made many friends. She was a keen- worker for her church and for the Plunket Society, of which .she was an executive member. She married Mr Row only a few years ago> being Miss Mummery, of Christchurch. There were two children of the marriage. PRIVATE VIEW. The fifty-second annual exhibition arranged by the Canterbury Society of Arts was held at the Art Gallery last night, when, at the invitation of the president and Council, an unusually large number of guests attended a pleasant conversazione. About three hundred and eighty pictures have been hung for the exhibition and many of them attracted mucli interest. Catalogue in hand, the conscientious amongst the guests made a thorough examination of the pictures, but it was difficult in such a large and friendly gathering to givo undivided attention to the works of art and doubtless the majority of the hundreds who attended last night's exhibition will revisit the Gallery at an early date. NATIONAL CONCERT. St. James's Theatre was not largo enough to hold all those who, attracted by a programme of unusual merit and anxious to help a good cause, wished to gain admission to the building last night, when to celebrate St. Patrick's Day, the Irish National concert was held! Madame Winnie Fraser, who was very warmly received by the huge audience, wore an elegant frock of ivory satin, embroidered at the neckline with ivory beads and green rhinest&nes, the touch of preen being repeated in her green satin shoes. - Miss Cecily Audibert's pretty frock, was of opal green spotted net, with two shaped frills at the basque line, and mounted 011 green taffeta. Each lady was presenteu with a beautiful bouquet. M iss K. O'Connor and Mrs • Toomey played the accompaniments. Miss O'Connor's frock was of ivorv taffeta patterned in shades of rose and red. A "500" afternoon party, in aid of the All Nations Fair, was given by Mrs Phillips at her home in Macaulay street, Addington. She arrived in Lyttelton in the ship British Empire in 1864 with her husband, Mr 'Daniel Haggett, who came out under engagement to the proprietor of the "Canterbury Standard" newspaper, which ceased publication in the following year. Air Haggett then became overseer of the Christehurch Press, a. position which he held lor some years.
