SCRATCH AND HANDICAP RACES. MEETING AT LANCASTER PARK. Including in their programme a number of cup races and handicap events, the Canterbury Amateur Athletic Olub held an evening meeting at Lancaster Park yesterday, when several Canterbury runners who had represented the province at the New Zealand championships were competitors. There were lair fields —very large in one event —and good finishes. The track was in fine order, assisting towards several fast runs. . Scratch events were the 100' yards Irancis Willys Cup race, and the 220 yds Darnell s Cup-event for youths under 18 years. G. I. Hart (O.A.A.C.)' won the former event from C. G. Gordon (Sydenham) after, a race m which the Sydenham man led for two-thirds of the distance. Hart, who has beaten Gordon in every scratch race tho two have run this year, came with a brilliant burst at the finish and breasted the tape to win by a close foot. The only other competitor, J. B. Mciarlane (Old Boys) was two yards away A promising junior, W. T. J. Maunder, won the 220 yards without difficulty from a fair field, in 24 A very good race was seen in the 440 yards Harper Cup handicap, a field of 25 starting. The back-markers had little chance of getting up, but the field finished in a bunch behind the placed men. J. K. Dickson (Sumner) came with a solid sprint to snatch victory from J. J. Price (Celtic) by a small margin, in the good time of 50,3-ssee. There were two good ■ finishes in the open handicaps, Hart repeating his success in the scratch race by winning th" 100 yards from the back mark afteft a fine run. W. L. fjargison (Sydenham) ran a determined mile from virtual scratch, and unwound a useful sprint in the straight to win by a yard from F. W. Dukes, of the same club. Simpson . # 3 Time, 24 l-ssec. Maunder, on the inside track, won well by two yards, Simpson close behind Ullrich. 440 YARDS HARPER CUP. •T. K. Dickson (Sumner), 28yds 1 J. J. Price (Celtic), 35yds .. 2 R. E. Wright (Celtic), 50yds .. 3 Time, 50 3-ssec. C. D. Burn went to the front early from Price, and the two opened up a gap at half-way.. A big field finished fast, Dickson coming away from the ruck to win by a foot, Wright four yards back at the head of a large bunch.

Hart finished very strongly over the last 25 yards. ONE MILE HANDICAP. W. L. Sargison (Sydenham), 30yds . . . . 1 F. W. Dukes (Sydenham), ICOyds .. 2 V. Ratcliffe (New Brighton 65yds .. 3 Time, 4min 27 4-ssec. There were ten starters, H. G. Holmes taking the lead aftei; laps, with the back-markers coming up. Ratcliffe ogoned up a gap with one lap 1o go, but Sargison came again to finish strongly irom Dukes, Ratcliffe dropping to third place.

CATHOLIC SCHOOL SPORTS.

COMBINED MEETING. A combined sports meeting was held yesterday, in which over 500 children, from the various Catholic schools in Christchurch, took part. The meeting was held at Lancaster Park, -which had been kindly lent free of charge to the organisers. The ground was in fine condition. There was a long programme of events, most of which, however, were of an impromptu nature; but the list was run off in good time, thanks to the efficiency of the organisers.
