Ho was with Gay Crest at the false rail, and looked very unlucky. SILVERSTItEAM HACK HANDICAP, Of 100 sovs. One mile. s—Sir Chas. Clifford's WINSOME HIND 8-3 . . . . . . B. Brodie 3 B—V.' Autopay was particularly unlucky, for after being left 30 yards he finished a close fourth. TINAKORI HACK HANDICAP, .0| 160 sovs. Six furlongs.. B—V. Riddiford's EMINENT 7-6 ■ , S. Wilson 1 s—O. S. NOTES ON THE RACING. [THE PRESS Special Service.] Blacksmith Impresses. The opening event 1 ; the Eimu Highweight Handicap, resulted in a close contest between the dividend-payers Blacksmith and Sailor's Love., The former and Flower led into the straight. Both were tackled by Sailor's Love inside the distance. Flower retired fifty yards froiix the post, and Sailor's Love drew up alongside Blacksmith. A neck-and-neck struggle ensued, Blacksmith gaining the verdict by a head, but having more in hand than the margin suggested. Flower was a fair third with Taragona next. Favourite Beaten. The Trial Plate provided another interesting finish, resulting in a victory for the Australian-bred The Mirror, who claims a Caulfield Cup winner, Shadowland, as his sire. He was always prominent, and had no trouble in beating the favourite, KTalmuk. Chief Clerk finished well into third place, with Morrath and Sailing next. St. Leger Contest. Peter Jackson monopolised the betting in the St. Leger Stakes, carrying close on half the machine total. The field was bunched for three parts of the journey, none of the six candidates appearing anxious to make any pace. It was not till the half mile post was reached that

galloping commenced. Esteem then took charge from Peter Jackson, while the others closed up. Esteem was 4irst into the straight from Peter Jackson, but the latter went to the front at the distance. View Halloo at this stago challenged and drow up to Peter Jackson, but the latter shot away from him when called upon, and won decisively by over two lengths. Thero was a bigger gap to Esteem, King Uollossus, and Fast Passage, who finished almost in'line. The race resolved itself into a three furlong sprint home, and this suited the winner. View Halloo made one determined'dash at him ill the run home, but it was of no avail. Fust Passage did good work in the straight, but was not favoured by the slow pace set over tho first mile. Juvenile Event. Investors were substantially correct in summing up the field for the Pacific Handicap. Head Lady, Midinette, Gaine Carrington, and Courtyard were prominent entering upon the course proper, but inside the distance Midinette rushed to the front and was not. troubled to beat Gaine Carrington bv three lengths. La Modcrnc was a good third just in front of Courtyard with Might. Inflation, Chief Marionette, and Tout le Mond next. - Tho'winner gave Mr G. M. Curric his first success for a long time. She is a sister to A 1 Jolson. She has a marked turn of speed and was not called upon for her bost. Gay Crest Surprises. The Thompson Handicap produced the good race expected and was responsible for sterling efforts on the part of Gay Crest and Cricket Bat. The former drew No. 1 at the barrier and was first to show out, but with two furlongs covered ho allowed Cricket Bat and Chrysology to head him, and he fol-> lowed them into the straight, with Cadland and High Falutin' next. .Cricket Bat shook off Chrysology at the distance, where Gay Crest, still keeping to the rails, got up on the inside of him and aftor a short struggle finished the better to beat him by a length. Chrysology made a renewed effort in the last few strides and got within a neck of Cricket Bat. Arikira was close up next, in front of Pomp, 'Hunting Cry, Shatter, Cadland, and Arr&w Lad. Gay Crest, although only moderately fancied, recorded a very popular win. Cricket Bat was not prominent early, but made a fast run rounding the far turn. He was probably unlucky in that Gay Crest got up on the inside of him at a critical stage. The time for the race was only one-quarter of a second outside tho race record established by Rcremoana in 1927. Winsome Hind Scores. Four horses were preferred to Winsome Hind in the Silverstream Handicap,' but she decisively settled the field with a powerful finishing run. She went away well and followed Azalia and Lyrical into the straight. As was the case in her previous race she was rushed up on the inside of Azalia at the false rail, and taking charge inside the distance went on to win comfortably by nearly two lengths. Lyrical beat Joio de Val narrowly for second money, the latter getting up to head Azalia on the post. Landmark and Fairway were next. Golden Wings Prevails. The Railway Handicap resulted in another close finish. Golden Wings led Silvermine, Arvada, Tobaccoland, and Grecian Princo on to the course'proper, with Autopay and Lady Quex, who were both slow away, in the rear. Golden Wings had charge inside the distance, and although challenged By Grecian Princo and later by Lady Quex, he held on to win by half a length from Lady Quex, who got up to beat Grecian Prince in the last couple of strides. Autopay did well to finish ne,xt, in front of Silvermine, Arvada, and Tobacooland. Well Beaten. The Quorn was made the biggest favourite of the day in the Tinakori Handicap, but was well beaten into fourth place. He was in line with the leaders but wide out entering upon the course proper, and although making a strong effort inside the distance, he was never really dangerous. Royal Bengal was in charge inside the distance, but in the last fifty yards Eminent came with a rush on the inside, accompanied by Normandy. In an exciting finish Eminent gained the honours by half a length from Normandy, who beat Royal Bengal on the post. - The Quorn was a length back, in front of Miladi, Waratah, and Merry Peel.* The winner has always shown his ability to gallop, but has disappointed On several occasions. Normandy, » half-brother to Anomaly, Shirley, and King's Jest, has raced fairly consistently, but is Btill a maiden. Royal Bengal, carrying Omeo'e colours, was the medium of a heavy commission, but missed making a return only in thc-last few strides.

The field for the Studholme Highweight Handicap was made a poor one by the withdrawal of Shortly, 'MerryPeel, and Night Flier. Nigge*head, heavily bandaged in front, was entrusted with more than half the investments in a poor pool. Appeal whipped round as the barrier rose and Tarquinius led the favourite to the far turn at a slow pace. Then Niggerhead went to the front and was not afterwards headed, x winning very easily by two lengths from Tarquinius, who beat Royal Limond by a similar . margin. Shortly, who figured on the card as an acceptor, died on Sunday. Metal Box was made a warm favourite for the Trial Plate, with Denise the' only other starter seriously- fancied. Song Box and Metal Bird led out from Denise, and approaching the far turn the latter ran up and joined Song Box. This pair led the favourite and Fine Weather across the top, with Night Guard next. Approaching the straight Fine Weather dropped back. Song Box

and Dcnise were still in cliargo turning for home, but once in the straight Pliar Lap's brother put in a good run, which carried him to the front opposite the lawn stand, and he beat the favourite home by a long neck. Song Box was only a head away third,, with Dcnise and Silver Sight next. * The Cup Race. Ramo and Black Duke were best fancied in the Waimate Cup and Gold Pit was much better backed than Ranelagh. Red • Racer, Ranelagh, and Gold Pit were smartest to begin, but racing past thfe grandstand Gold Pit in charge from . Red Racer, Night Effort, and Ranelagh, with Black Duke covering some extra ground as the field lined out of the" straight. There was no change in the leading division until approaching the far turn where Gold Pit retired in favour of Red Racer, with Ranelagh,■ Night Effort, and Ramo next. Approaching the home turn Ranelagh took charge and'was followed into the straight by Ramo, Night Effort, and Gold Pit. At the distance Ranelagh was well clear and looked a winner, but Ramo finished'-'with a well-timed run and beat him home, by a long neck. Night Effort was two lengths away third, a head in front of Red Racer. Minerval and ; Black Duke were next. Gold Pit, who was short of work owing to having bruised one of her feet, stopped badly over the last furlong, and Pull Feather ran one of his bad races. Margaret Bing'en—a half-sister to Waitaki Girl and sister to Stanley Bingen—and Auspicious were the only two backed in the Morven Harness Trot. The favourite nearly fell and broke badly at the end of two furlongs, and Irish Bingen and Sunbrown set the pace for nearly a mile. Then Almont Cling took a hand, but his effort was short-lived and Sunbrown and Erin's Own led round the far turn and across the top. Sunbrpwn and Auspicious both broke at the top of the straight,' and the favourite, with a fast run, finished right under thfe judge's box,' to beat Erin's Owjn by a " length, with -Dolly JTuon three lengths away third, and Evening Sun next. The Sprint. Master Anomaly was much 1 better backed than Assemble for the President's Handicap. Hot Tea led the favourite, who was inclined to hang out on the turns, into the straight from True Shaft ( and Meadow Lark. Assemble, who was racing. half a dozen lengths behind the field across the top, moved up quickly directly the home turn was reached. Both True Shaft and Meadow Lark had Hot Tea and Master Anomaly's measure half way down the straight. Then Assemble put in a wonderful final run and beat them both by half a length. True Shaft was a head in front of Meadow Lark, who is nearly back to form.

Red Royal/ was made a much better favourite than either Adult or Pharaoh an the'Waitangi Hack Handicap. He at once went to the front and after going a couple of furlongs, was four lengths of Crash, with another break of the same distance to Adult and Night Parade. Crash moved up racing across the top and was "with the favourite ■when heads were turned for home. They raced down' the straight together well clear ap.d in the last stride Crash obtained a half-head verdict. Royal Limond wa.s two lengths away third. Pharaoh, Adult, and Night Parade were the next to finish.

Red Spur was much better fancied than either Margaret Bingen (penalised 36 yards) or Auspicious in the Hook Handicap, and after following Great Seaman for over a mile had no difficulty in running past and beating him by four lengths. With three furlongs to go Margaret Bingen, who went away oadly, looked dangerous in third place, Dut she failed to stay on, and Evening ■twi fi " lßhed tw o lengths away - third. uoil/ Huon was a good fourth.
