IMPORTANT DEVELOPMENT IN A CITY STORE.

Notwithstanding the fact that the Store was crowded with customers and lie was very busy, Mr J. L. Hay, of Hay's, Limited, found time to express his views on the important change of policy his Firm put into operation yesterday.

"What induced you to introduce your new low price policy when your fl'irm already had a reputation for good quality things at low prices Mr Hay was asked. ■ "That's very easily answered,'' replied Mr H.ay. "There's no greater optimist, than 1, but at the same time one cannot shut one's eyes to the fact that we are passing through very difficult times, and the great bulk of the people are finding it difficult to maJte ends meet. If wages and incomes are shrinking the public have a right to expect lower prices, and that's exactly what we are giving the public. Apart from the two days we closed, our staff lias been occupied for weeks past on the big job of marking down our regular stock.'' "But,'' Mr Hay was asked, "you don't menu to say that all these beautiful new goods are lower in price than is usual at the beginning of a s,eason.'' "Believe it or. not, that is precisely what we have done," said Mr Hay. "Ask your wife to come in and see what she lias to say about these new hats, for instance. She knows more than you do about prices, and she will tell you if what we have said is true, or not."

"Well, it heats me how you can do it," replied the interviewer. "Quito easily explained," said Air Hay. "We sell for cash, and dont have big rents, rates, and taxes, no delivery expenses, and no frilJs about our business, for which the customer, has tx> pay in the usual way." "Of course you expect a large turnover to compensate you for the loss of profit, I', 1 ', the interviewer observed. "Well, quite frankly, yes,' l said Mr Hay. "Tf the public want us to maintain our very low prices they have got to support u« solidly, and I. am quite sure they will." "Good luck to ynu, anyhow," the interviewer remarked, as he picked-his way out of the crowded store. —6
