NORTH CANTERBURY.

KAIKOURA. The first frost of tTie season was registered on "Wednesday morning. The day was sunny. .The annual sports held under the supervision of St. Patrick s Sports Association take place on Saturday. The football season will open on April 2nd. „ In the billards match final D. Stove defeated J- W. Anderson. Good entries have been received lot tho Easter meeting of the Athletic, (Jvcling, and Axemen's Club. Mr E. W. Flower has returned to Kaikoura, after a tour of the North Island. A successful outing was held on Sunday by the Motor-cycle Club, _ the event taking the form of a reliability trial to Claverley Beach and back. The return journey was started at 2.10, and Kaikoura was reached at 3.40, after a good run. Another series of competitions will take place at Mr H. Blensdale's grounds shortly, members being very keen on keeping up their points for tho season.

Following are the points resulting from the trial 011 Sunday: -—Cars: N. Mason 1, L. Chapman and G. Workman equal for second. Cycles: H. Sharpliit 1, L. Chapman and G. Workman being equal for second.

SEFTON. A meeting of intending members for the W.E.A. Box Study Circle was held in tho Methodist Church parlour on Monday evening, tt was decided to hold the first meeting 011 the Monday after Easter. The subject for the season is to be "Personalities."' Miss Uraddiaw was elected as secretarytreasurer for the season, with Mr P. J. Thorne as leader. The annual meeting of the Sefton Methodist Ladies' Guild was held in the church parlour on Wednesday afternoon. The secretary's report showed that the sum of £lO 19s 9d had been raised during the year and that alter tho payment of the congregation's share toward the upkeep of tho parsonage the balance of the money had been spent in the purchase of an electric iron for the use of the church. Hie election of officers resulted as follows:—President, Mrs P. .T. Thorne; secretary, Mrs W. J. Henderson. A "'bring and hu.v" sale realised 18s.

CUST. A large* congregation attended the harvest festival service held in St. David's Presbyterian Church on Sunday morning. The Rev. N. H. Finch was the preacher. The church had been decorated. After the service the produce was sent to the Presbyterian orphanages. The fortnightly meeting of the Loyal Cust Lodge, M.U., 1.0.0. F., .was held on Tuesday evening, the N.G., Bro. R. Bennett, presiding ov'er a good attendance. The District Grand Master, Bro. Cook, was present, accompanied by members of the Loyal Rangiora Lodge. Bro. Gaghan, a Past Grand Master of the New Zealand Branch, and Bro. Gourlny, P.D.G.M., North Canterbury District, were also present. At the conclusion of the meting Bro. Gaghan gave an interesting address on "Tho Emblems of tho Order."

HALSWELL, On Saturday afternoon a garden party and sale of work was hold at St. Mary's Vicarage grounds, the proceeds to help the improvement funds. Mrs Cracroft Wilson declared the fete open. Afterwards she visited the various stalls t which were in charge of tho following:— Sewing: Mesdames Templeton and Brightwell; produce: Messrs F. and 11. Kolkman; ice-cream and sweets: Mrs T. Wright and Mrs F. Wilhelin; cake?: Mrs F. Rparkes and Mrs \V. Hayes; brantub, Miss M, Cox; afternoon tea: Met-, dames Iti Gardiner, S. Hayes; C. Gardiner, Miss Gibbs, and assistants; sideshows, Air N. Gardiber; sheep-guessing, Mr S. Hayes: Competitions were won by Mavis Rathgcn, Mrs Kelly, Mrs C. Sparkes, Miss B. Proctor, Mr C. Hobbs, Mr L. C. Wood, and Miss M. Kelly. A musical programme was provided by Mr J. I. Smail during the afternoon. Over £4O was the result of tho garden party. On Saturday evening a social was held under the management of the Hall Committee. Competitions were won by Miss V- McConneJl and Mrs E. Lunt. Tbe men's competitions were won by Mr F. Kolknmn and Mr E. Lunt. Mr Leggett's Orchestra supplied the dance music, and Mr N. Gardiner was M.C.

TAI TAPU. A harvest thanksgiving service was conducted in the Presbyterian Church on Sunday evening by Mr French, of the Presbyterian Social Service Association. Thcro was a large congregation. Among bowls of lilies were quantities of fruit, vcgetablcn, jam, sauce, cakes, flour, and potatoes. Miss Edua Macartney was the organist.

HORNBY. A church parade by the Hornby Druids was held on Sunday eveningMr Karl P. Lilly gave an interesting sermon to a large congregation. Brother Collins read the lessons. _ The Hornby Cricket Club completed its game with Stewart's Gully at Waltham Park on Saturday, Hornby winning by an innings and three runs.

TEMPLETON. Mr J. C. M. a son of Mr and Mrs George Lee, has left by the MaUura for Sydney, where lie will attend the opening ceremony of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, leaving Inter for England. The annual meeting of the Tcnipleton Rugby Football Club was held in the Public Library. It wa3 decided to enter a team in the third grade competition. The following officers were elected:
