MacLeod (Auckland) arrived yesterday on a visit to Mr and Mrs J. MacLeod. I Misses King, Satcheil, and Hunter, of the teaching staff of St. Margaret s College, Christchurch, who have been on a cycling tour of the West Coast., arrived yesterday from the I'ox Glacier, and returned to Christchurch. Miss M. Freebury, who has been visiting Mrs W. F. Diedrieh (Kokatahi), returned vesterday to Oamaru. She was accompanied by-Miss Nancy Brooks. Mrs T. A. Kevell, who lias been visiting her sou in Grcymouth, returned yesterday to Christchurch. Mr A. 11. Carey, manager of the Lank of New Zealand at Grey mouth, and Mrs Carey, left yesterday on a visit to Wellington. Mrs J. .Fowler and Miss Joyc.o .feowlcr, left vesterday on a visit to C'hristchure i. Miss Kate Garvcy (Runanga) _ Icit yesterday on a holiday visit to Christchurch. Miss Dorothy Thwaitef. who ha.i been visiting her parents in Oamaru, returned yesterday. Mr and Mrs .Tack Steel, 'who have been visiting relatives in Grcymouth, returned yesterday to Christchurch. Wedding. i The wedding was celebrated at Holy Trinity Church yesterday, Archdeacon J. A. Jermyn officiating, of Mr Roy M«Hirus and Miss Lena Kelly. The bride wore a frock of salmon pink floral georgette, and carried a bouquet of roses. She was attended by her sister, Miss 1 Lily Kelly, who wore a frock of green crepe de "chine, with hat to tone, and carried a bouquet of sweet peas. Mr jJ. Brady was best man. After the | ceremony a reception was held at the ! residence, of the bride's parents. Mr i and Mrs McHinw left later in the oxj press for Christchurch, en route to Wellington. Sawmill Idle. The heavy rains last Friday washed away three bridges which span the Stillwater creek and cutting at Arnold, putting Messrs Stratford Blair and Company's saTvmill out of action until the bridges can be rebuilt. Fourteen hands were employed at the mill which was working full time, cutting white pine. It will take about three weeks to rebuild the bridges. Fire. Fire on Wednesday morning completely destroyed the residence of Mr P. McLean, "in Westport, together with its contents. The outbreak .had a strong hold when discovered by a neighbour. Heavy rain on Wedeuesday completely blocked the Arnold river, at the Grey Power Board's hydro works, which ran high and prevented the -work of concreting the tunnel being continued. Thewater is now being diverted, so that about half the tunnel can be concreted. When the last of the concrete in the dam has set, adjustments and tests will be made. If the latter arc satisfactory a change over from the Power House at Dobson will be made immediately. Fishing Party. Th" Grey County Council met yesterday, the chairman, Cr. J. Ryall, prcsi-l-mu. The Under-Secretary of Tntciir.J Affairs wrote in reference to the bomi i daries of the Cobden Town Board, asls- [ ing the Cuoncil to arrange, as soou as | possible, a conference with the Town Board. The matter was left in the iiands of the County C'erk. Cr. Donnellan pointed out that owijxg to floods in the Matai river, children could not gain access to the railway station. The Council promised about two years ago to do something to relieve the situation. . The County Engineer stated that plans and estimates for the work had been prepared and sent to the Highways Board, but had not as yet been approved. It might be found that the cost of the road might be beyond the Council. The work proposed was all that the Highways Board could be asked to give a subsidy for. After dealing with the financial statement presented by the CountyClerk, the Council decided to make a ten per - cent, "cut" on all salaries and wages of its staff. Timber Trade. To enable them to cope with orders, the United Sawmills are stated to be arranging to work a double ahift at their mill at Manson's Siding. This will keep their workers iemployed while the two mills recently destroyed by fire, at Te Kinga, are being rebuilt. Found Dead. : A resident of Blackball named A. McDonald, aged 60, was found dead yes terday morning on his gold-mining claim near Brunner. Mr McDonald left Blackball to go to the elaim and while awaiting his son, had apparently been sitI ting on a log making a cigarette. When the son reached the claim he found ! his father dead. j
