Crawford was affected by the heat. SENIOR COMPETITION. < CANTERBURY COLLEGE IN THE LEAD. Weakened teams contributed to the defeat on Saturday oi two of the leading clubs in the Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association's Senior competition. Both Avonside and Fendalton, hitherto unbeaten, lost their matches, tho former team going down to Canterbury College 1., who ore now left at the head o£ the competition, having won all their matches to date. Saturday's round was played on slow courts, although tho weather after threatening rain for tho greater part ef tho morning, proved perfect for tennis. Both CanteibUry College I. and Avonsido were below strength, the former team being ■without H. A. Barnett and the latter lacklug tho services of C. Angas and H. Dymond. 'Varsity, moreover, had stronger rmergencies to draw upon, with the result that they lost only one match during tho day, that being a surprise victory of. J. W. Arnold over B. A. Barrer. Barter was not at his best, and the game developed into a long series of baae-line rallies. A. R. Cant won comfortably from B. E. Souter, serving and driving with epeed and accuracy, while Andrews's net play was. too good for W. Deans. E. E. England's defeat of P. Burnett gave the College team a lead of two matches on the singles, and neither pair having any difficulty in the doubles, tho result was soon beyond doubt. J. R. Crowshuw's absence from tho Fendalton I. team placed it at a disadvantage against United 11., and although the singles w*r» Bhsfrod, United won both doubles, rrininng the match by four rubbers to two. T. Rhodes-Williams, playing a sound, even game, beat J. G. A'Court with the loss of only four games, although the latter is above him on the ranking list. W. S. Soraervillo achieved a very meritorious win ever H. G. SeaTle, who -has been in fine fcrm this season. The first doubles match ■was interesting and productive of some good tennis. A succession of four love games after 2-all had been called gave A'Court and Fiahor tho first set against Rbodea-Williams and Searle, but the latter team were definitely the stronger in the ■ remainder of the match.

' E. L. Sowden, a promoted A grade player, • er.ined the* only win for Canterbury College 11. against Fendalton 11., decisively beating a player of experience and ability in P. .D. Hall. The second "Varsity team was . much below strength, but J. H. Griffiths ' and G. Knight, usually second doubles pair, p!tyed tenacious and plucky tennis to fully extend N. G. Munns and B. B. Loughnan. Linwood and Cashmere, who have not so far won a match, lost to United I. and St. Albans respectively. In the former match, J. R. Johnston and J. H W. Shoppard staged a marathon encounter of forty frames, there being little between the players in any department of the game. C. C. Trceby, the younj? Linwood player, added to a creditable list of successes a victory over the veteran P. G. Greenwood. W. R. Robinson, first man for St. Albanß, brought off a surprise win over D. F. Glanville, this contributing largely io his team's success. The Cashmere man, however, was playing 1 without his usual dash—probably a reaction from his recent labours in the North Island. With five rounds completed and another four to be played, the competition points are as follows: •W. L. Pts. Canterbury College I. ..605 Avonside .. .. -.4 1 4 Fecdalton I.
