HORTICULTURE WEEK.

NATIONAL FLOWER SHOW. MEETING OF COMMITTEE. The general committee arranging for Horticulture Week, which is to open in Christchurch next Tuesday met last night, Mr O. W. B. Anderson presiding. Final arrangements for the National Flower Show, to be held. in King Edward Barracks, on Thursday and Friday of next week, were discussed. The chairman reported that entries for the show were coming in very freely. One or two florists were going to provide fine exhibits. An exhibit from Invercargill would consist of sun dials, garden furniture, and horticultural sundries. District Exhibits. As to district exhibits, Mr Anderson said that they were progressing more satisfactorily than reports at the previous meeting indicated. There would be a district bay from the Diamond Harbour district, and surrounding bays; also there would be district exhibits from Timaru and from North Otago. The New Zealand Fruitgrowers' Federation - had applied for-140 .square feet of space, and would exhibit some of their products, and also, Dominion marks. . ~ Outstanding Features. Referring to the programme "for the week, the chairman said that tb> combined civic welcome in respect of the conferences of the - New Zealand Institute of Horticulture, the New Zealand Horticultural Trades' Association,, and the Association of Superintendents of Parks and Gardens, would take place on Tuesday at 9.30 a.m., and the'combined official opening by the . Prime Minister, the R-t. Hon. G. W; Forbes, would take place at 10 a.m. The annual Bank's Lecture (instituted in 1926 as a' recognition of the work of the, celebrated botanist, Sir Joseph Banks, who was attached to Captain" Cook's first exploring expedition to New Zealand) would be delivered in this Canterbury College Hall at 7.45 > j>,in. on Wednesday, January 27th. The sub-" ject was: "The Early History of Horticulture in New Zealand," and the lecturer would be Mr Robert Nairn. The secretary (Mr H. Firman), replying to a question, said that he had not been able to > arrange for a forestry exhibit at the show.- There would be a fine exhibit of citrus fruits. Publicity Arrangements. Mr E. E. Wiltshire, reporting on behalf of the Publicity Committee, said that Miss Iris Edmonds was unable to carry out her part of the programme, as she is going to England, and was giving up her pupils. In order that the committee should not be disappointed, Miss' Edmonds intended See-, ing Miss Dorothy • Manhire, and had no doubt that she would carry out Miss Edmonds's ' part of the programme. Mr O. W. B. Anderson had interviewed the Boxing Association, which kindly had offered to lend the committee its staging and canvas cover complete, and the offer had been accepted with thanks. Arrangements had been made for the newspaper ad. vertieing during Horticulture Week. The Mayor (Mr D. G. Sullivan, MP.) was interviewed regarding festoons of coloured lights in Cashel street and at the entrance to the Barracks," arid was asked that the lighting should be the City's contribution to "Horticulture Week. Cr. J. W. Beanlarid/chairman of the Council's. Works' Committee, also was seen, and was very keen in the matter, having witnessed a similar display at Timaru. The Mayor was quite sympathetic, and promised to have the matter brought before the Electricity Committee, and would try to get it to agree to the request. An offer had been received from an orchestra of six and authority was asked to incur the necessary expense. As to the suggestion that flowers should bo displayed in" different parts of the City, they were awaiting a meeting of the committee of the Horticultural Society to see if interested . flower growers would provide something wherewith to brighten up the City. The report was adopted, aikf the authority asked for in respect of the orchestra was granted.
