SANDERS CUP CONTEST

CANTERBURY'S REPRESENTA-* TIVE. A3 a. result of her performances since she was launched a fortnight ago it seems likely that Avenger may oe chosen to represent Canterbury in the Sanders Cup contest at Wellington necst month. Under every test she has shown herself to bo more speedy than Colteen, which has represented the province for the past three years, and which had practically been chosen to go to Wellington this year. The choice will be decided at a meeting of the Canterbury Yacht and Power-Boat Association to-morrow evening. On Saturday afternoon Avenger, using an old suit of sails, and sailed by Eliott Sinclair, beat Colleen, using new sails, and with George Brassell at the helm, by 40sec, in an open race at Lvttelton. On Sunday Avenger (E. Sinclair), Colleen (J. Forman), and Irene (T. Hobbs) had another try-out in a stiff north-easter with a big sea. \ Handicapped by her old sails, Avenger showed herself\to be faster on the run and on tho lead, and about equal with Colleen on the wind.

In future the Transport Department will be accommodated in the Government Buildings, Wellington, instead of at the official residence of the Prime Minister in Tinakori road. In the latter stages of the recent session the Minister for Transport, the Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates, indicated on more than one occasion that it was intended to make the Transport Department a branch of the Public Works Department, in much the same way as the hydro-electric branch is at present. The transfer of the Department is understood to be one of the steps in the direction of giving effect to that proposal. Engineering and highway construction has an important place in the transport problem, and in the Public Works Department there are the experts who, can give advice on these questions.—Press Association. Certain readjustments in the amount .recently agreed to be paid for brass bands' concerts were made at last night's meeting of the City Council in conformity with a report presented by the Baths and Entertainment Committee. The report stated that on October Isth the Council decided that the amount available for band concerts should.be reduced frqm £270 to £2OO, brass bands being paid £5 for each concert,'and pipe bands £4. The Christchurch Bands' Association recently waited on the Bylaws and Finance Committee with reference to tliQ reduced amounts decided on. In consequence, the Committee referred the question to the Baths and Entertainment Committee with the suggestion that the number of concerts might be reduced in order that, while the amount available on the estimates was not exceeded, the cost of each concert should bo as close-as possible to £6 6si At last night's meeting of the Council the Baths and Entertainment Committee reported that it had given the matter careful consideration and had decided to reduce the Woolston, Derry's, Municipal and Ist, Canterbury Regimental Bands' allocation by one concert each and to increase the vote for brass bands to £5 10s, instead of £5. The report was adopted. A widow, born at St. Albans, who has returned to England after living for 25 years in the United States, sent Mr Snowden, the Chancellor of the Exchequer," £2OO anonymously "in memory of the woman who gave her free-will offering—the widow's mite—almost 2000 years ago. Built in 1868, and first of all using a two-cylinder steam engine and later a single-cylipder petrol engine designed ahd built by the maker of the vehicle, a motor-car belonging to a Pennsylvanian is claimed as probably the oldest in the world.
