MAGISTERIAL. TUESDAY. (Before Mr K. D. Mosley, S.M.) REMANDED TO WELLINGTON. Norman James Shields, on charges of failing to comply with the terms of his probation'and of failing to comply with the terms of a maintenance order, was remanded to Appear at Wellington on Thursday. THEFT OF FURNITURE. Georga Harold Stevens, alias James Hadkins, pleaded guilty to charges of stealing furniture to & total iraluo of £39 19s 6d, the proparty of Constancy Byrch, and attempting to obtain from William Adair Anderson the sum of £SO by falsely representing that certain furniture at 12 ICnowles street was his owh unencumbered property. Counsel for ths accused said that Stevens had lost his employment and had been able to find no other way of raising the money for an operation necessitated by his . wife s health. , . , On each charge he was sentenced to lour months' imprisonment wtih hard labour. "HEFT CHARGES. William Adolphus Cunningham pleaded not guilty to .charges of the theft of ft bag and contents valued at £5, the property of Leslie jJoug-las Mulligan, and the theft of a wallet and papers valued at 10s, the property of Leslie Charles Wright. It was stated that the bag was stolen from outside Dalgety and Company's building. Cunningham was arrested in New Brighton in a drunken condition with the bag in liis possession and some of the contents mißsing. The wallet had not been missed by its owner until Cunningham brought it.to ltim with the explanation that lie had found it and suggested a reward. Four cheques were missing from the wallet, and the accused had given one of these to another man. , Accused was convicted on each charge and sentenced to six months* and seven days' imprisonment with hard labour respectively. ALLEGED ATTEMPTED MURDER. Gertrude McConaghpy, aged 27 years, was charged that on November 26th she attempted to murder Slervyn McConaghey, and that she attempted to commit suicide. Through counsel she elected to be tried by a jury. Chief-Detective J. parroll,, who prosecuted, said that the facts of the case were known to the Court, and Be would call formal evidence. Edwin Haste Stonypr, clerk, of 114 North Parade, Christchurch, said that on the morning of November 26th his attention was attracted by a cry, and he saw the head and shoulders of a girl in the river. He received no reply when ho asked her if she wanted any help. She told witness that Bhe had fallen in. When witness reached the bank he saw that the girl was apparently trying to push a child out on to the bank. Witness pulled both of them out of the water and the girl told him that she could not go home, but asked him to take her to her mother's place at Leeston. She told witness that she had tried to take her own life and that she had been driven to it by the man Bhe was living with and also his mother. Constable J. MrLeod said that he found the accused near the river. She told him that she was unhappy and had had a quarrel with a man the previous night. She was then taken to the Police Station. Albert Francis Lee, mechanic, of 100 Fitzgerald street, said that the child waß four years of age and had been looked after b.v his mother for the last three years and a half. During tbe past six months McConaghey had also been living with , his mother. Gertrude McConaghey had never been ill-treated at witness's home apart from a harsh word now and again. She had several

times expressed the intention of taking hfer , life, but witness did not take this seriously.,He had had no words with her op November, 25th Marion Lee, widow, of 100 Fit'zgei-ald street, said that on the evening of November 25th she : had occasion, to speak severely to Gertrude McConaghey. She had been very bad tempered for the last three months. Detective Robert Thompson produced a statement from accused. Irt this she said that she had been depressed for some time partly, because she could not get work and partly » because she had been treated unfairly by Lee. She had had the intention of taking her life and that of her 'child for some time..' Counsel entered a plea of not guilty on each charge, and the. accused was committed for trial to the ' Supreme Court. The Magistrate made an order for her detention nj ran while in the Salvation Army Home. CIVIL COURT. (Before Mr H. A. Young, S.M.) BREAQH OF AWARD. Douglas Campbell, proprietor of the Spanish Lounge Bestaurant, Armagh street, was proceeded against by : the ■ Inspector oi Awards, for an alleged breach of tho New ■' Zealand Tea Rooms and Restaurant- Employees' Award, it being claimed that de fendant employed a waitress after tho hour of 10.80 p.m. A penalty of £lO was claimed.
