ADDITIONS TO BUILDING. Additions to the new Abattoir buildings at an estimated cost of £2400 were agreed to by the City Council last night on the recommendation ' ot the Abattoir, Reserves, and- Cemeteries Committee. It was reported that the erection of the building had been completed. The machinery contractors were proceeding with the erection of the rails in the hanging hall; about half of the uew beef rails had been completed, and about 75 per cent, of the new mutton rails. It was .anticipated that the machinery contract would be finally completed in about three or four weeks. The total cost of the building, machinery, and electricity contracts to date, together wit,h other sundry items, was approximately £30,000, leaving an unexpended 'balance of £4OOO in the Loan Account. The Committee therefore considered it opportune to put in hand a number of works, necessity for which was referred to by the City Engineer in July > 1930, and which were as follows: • Concreting around- yards, tanks, engine house, boiler house, and around new buildings. Repairs to old buldings; fixing decayed doors, barges, lanterns, broken louvres, constructing engineer's tool and workshop, etc. Pulling out existing timber cdumns in front of building and substituting rolled steel joists, giving a clear span of 60 feet and facilitating loading out of carcases. Painting all woodwork of existing hanging hall and annexed buildings, including whitewashing of the whole of Ij]io interior of the old building. Covering in exposed portions of the yards, both sheep. and cattle. Lofts in cattle and sheep yards. The total estimated cost of these items was £2400.
