NORTHCOTE ROAD ROUTE.
CHANGE IN TRANSPORT SYSTEM. It is probable that the bus service at present conducted by the Christchurch Tramway Board over the old Northcote road tram route will be discontinued at an early date, and that in order to meet the convenience qf residents in the district the buses now running along the North road between the City and certain country towns will be allowed to pick up and set down passengers. The By-laws, Finance, and Departmental Committed reported to last night's meeting of the City Council that the Minister for Transport had written stating that in August, 1930, the Christchurch Tramway Board was permitted by Order-in-C'ouncil to discontinue its Northcote road extension tramway service on the conditions that at .the date of discontinuance an efficient transport service (i.e omnibus service) would be available -to take the place ol the tramway service. The Board now found that the omnibus service was running at a loss and. had authority to discontinue it. The Minister further stated that he had been advised that the withdrawal of the service could be arranged so that no hardship would be entailed to the residents, as it was stated that eight to twelve omnibuses traversed the route in question every day, but were not at present'allowed to pick up passengers. He asked the Council for an expression of its view as to whether there would be any possibility of arranging matters so that the Tramway Board's service could be discontinued and arrangements made for the other omnibuses traversing that particular route to give a service which would meet the public needs over that route. . The c Committee recommended that the Minister be informed that it was proposed to i-emove the restriction in regard to the picking up and setting down of passengers by omnibuses travelling over this particular route and was of the opinion that the residents would - not be inconvenienced by the j
withdrawal of the Tramway Board's omnibuses. The report was adopted.
