Both the Danneviike ;and Hororata Meetings are at unU3via,l dates, the former having previously, "been held in the early spring and the latter in the late autumn. Last year the 'pre-holiday racing ceased with the Waipa Meeting.

Riders for Woodville. - The southern horsemen, A. E. Ellis, L. J. Ellis, T. Green, A. and J. W. Jennings have arranged to be present at the Woodville Meeting, opening on Wednesday. The last-nained •. will ride Compris and Invictus in their engagements. For Ellerslie. Mr G. P. Payne has decided that his mare Spoon is to race at the Auckland' Summer Meeting, and she has been nominated for" events .on each of> .the four days' programme. Owing to'her trainer, G.. Murray-Aynsley, taking his own horses to the southern Meltings, \ • iSpoori will be' sent north in charge of oitaof the stable hands, and' Mr Payne will'. folloWi later. . i " Holiday Nominations. Encouraging Race. - Grand Review, by Last Dart from Bonsign, a stable-mate of. Great Star, attracted attention, by her forward running up to the straight entrance in the opeping event at Ashburton on Saturday. She was not racSd as a two-year-old ,Jast season and has ,been produced only twice this term, so there is reason to expect her to improve with racing from'now onwards. A _Game~Effort. / Pixie Gold was expected to raee prominently in the Moreton Hr. k Handicap, at Ashburton-on Saturday, but his chance t was jeopardised, by his, rider, J. . -Sheehan, apprenticed to G. J. Pine, suffering an injury at the start of the' f race through Grecian Prince rearing up and ' colliding' with his mount. Pixie 4 Gold, after* being-badly< away, riiade a fast run along- the back, but his rider appeared to be unable to control him, rounding the far turn, and the gelding had little assistance from him for the remainder of the journey. On returning to, the'enclosur& Sheehan collapsed, and .medical assistance was necessary, bu|t tie quickly recovered, ai»d : beyond a • bruised chest he suffered no serious consequences/.,/

LATEST NEWS rKUM *ak aiw

His First Start. Red Arrow, trained by F. Christmas for Mr E. Gates, made a promising showing in his first appearance in public in the Winchmore Hack Handicap. He was slow away and ran very greenly during the middle stages, but when he settled down to work in the straight he executed a strong finishing run. He is an upstanding four-year-old gelding by Arrowsmith from the All Red mare, Red Queen, dam of Gay, Queen, and with more experionee is likely to do good service for his connexions. ■ ■ A Faulty Arrangement. Some of the field paraded for the Moreton Hack Handicap at Ashburton ! on Saturday gave the starter a good deal of trouble, the worst offenders being horses which previously had behaved well at the tapes. The cause was attributed to the position of the mile and a quarter barrier allowing outside patrons to crowd closely round the field. Probably the Ashburton Club will deem it wise to improve on the present arrangements in regard to future ten furlong events on their programmes. Hororata Nominations. The Hororata Racing Olub have reason to be pleased with the nominations received for their Meeting on December 19th. Class is reasonably well represented, and special interest will be added to the day's racing by the fact that the majority of the entrants will be engaged at the various holiday fixtures. Not for Mares.. There are eight mares among the forty-two horses weighted for this year's Auckland Cup, but at the most not more than half this number can be regarded as even possible starters. The mares are My Own (7-11), Eaglet (7-1), Charmaine (T-V), Cessation (7-0), Duellona (7-0), Day Comet mare (7-0), uold Money (7-0), and Jenny Diver (7-0). Last year not a single mare took part in the contest. Only five mares have been listed among Auckland Cup winners in the fifty-eight years of its history. The first of the sex to win was Lottie (8-0), who led the field hope in 1894, and in the following year Anita (6-9) won. A perio'd of eighteen years then elapsed before Warstep (8-9) added to the score in 1914. Then after an interval of three years Mascot (6-13) won, -and Karo (7-13) was successful in 1919. Next Irish Sweep. Jr.dging by what has been published recently, a good many New Zealand people will be interested in the news that the Irish Minister for Justice has sanctioned the scheme of the Hospitals Committee for a sweepstake to be organised on the Grand National Steeplechase, to be run at Aintree on the last •Friday in March, 1932. TROTTING NOTES.

Reminders. - , Acceptances for the New Brighton Meeting close to-itiorrow at noon. There is a payment of 3 sovs for the New Zealand Sapling Stakes due to the Ashburton Trotting. Club to-dajy at 5 p.m. . On Wednesday, at 9 p.m., nominations close for the Waikouaiti and Oamaru Meetings' (two trotting events on each programme). - Nominations fox the Ashburton Trotting Club's Summer Meeting close on Wednesday at 5 p.m. His Initial Win. By -winning 'the May field Handicap Trot at. Ashburton on Saturday Colorado registered his first, win, but he had not an easy task in doing bo, for he was required to cover the two miles in 4min 37 3-ssecj' which must ba considered exceptionally fast time for a maiden horse. He opened his cftfeer as a two-year-old Tvjienhe ran third' at the Hororata Meeting, going 3min 45sec for a mile and a half, and last' season he ran third to Flying Cloud and Little Victor at Mothveh, taking 3ntin 31 l-ssec for a mile and a half. His win was heralded by his recent running, as -in his four starts before he won he was three times fourth and once third. Earlier in his career Colorado was not good away from the barrier, but he has now overcome that failing, and' as he is but a four-year-old and: a good: stayer E. B. .Berry should go oa to further successes with the gelding. Lightly Raced. Claranda, like Colorado/ scored his first victory when he won at Ashburton on Saturday. Although an eight-year-old, he has done little racing, one start as a three-year-old, one as a six-year-old, and seven outings as a seven-year-old being his performances until this season. When the field 'had settled down in the Melrose Trot Handicap he could be seen prominent in the second bunch, but it was not till the home turn was reached that he was asked for an effort.; A: fast run from there carried him to the lead below the distance, and he was not further troubled to gain the , verdict by two lengths. ,

Did Not Take Part. • ' Tatsy de Oro collided; with another horse just prior to the start of the Mayfi'eid Handicap Trot at Ashburton and broke some gear. She did not take any part in ■ Promising Performance. , /■ For a green one, On Parade gave a yexy creditable performance, in the Mayfield Handicap at Ashburton. Beginning smartly, he was in the' leading division practically throughout/to be in sixth place at ' the finish, and he did his work -well all the way. It was a pleasing performance of the three-year-old colt, who was making his first* public appearance. An Overdue Win. - Glandore, winner of the Raglan Handicap at the Waikato Meeting on Saturday, until that success had not won a -race since- he' scored in the Ferguson Handicap on the same track x in March, 1925, although he has been regularly raced in -the interim. > , Well Performed. Worthy Queen compensated for her two ! defeats at the Auckland Meeting last month by winning at Waikafo. The four-year-old trotter has a good | record to date, and she looks like reaching higher company. Raced Badly. r Edna Worthy, a well-backed second .favourite for the Melrose Handicap at Ashburton on Saturday, aided by a fast beginning, led the field to the mile post, but from there on she began to drift, And she finished a long way back. It was not a good showing. Essay, the favourite for the-same race, had any chance she may have possessed spoilt at the start,! as she could not secure a clear getaway on account of several of those round about her standing on thp mark. Essay "was drawn in the second line, divisions being necessitated' owing to tho large field.

Favourite Beaten. Plain Silk, who was made favourite for the Mayfield Handicap at Ashburton, was in the running all the way, but he could not go with Colorado and Eoyal Parade over the concluding stages. However, his display was far superior to those at Forbury Park during the previous week, where he did not pace kindly at all. Auckland Nominations. The Auckland Trotting Club has received good nominations for its Summer Meeting, which will be opened on December 28th, and there is a larger Canterbury entry than was generally expected. Twenty-five horses have been nominated in the Auckland Cup, and ten of these hail froin the Canterbury district, Muriel de Oro, Regal Voyage, Roval Silk, Ngingongingo, Red Shadow, Pluto, Meteor, Golden Pedro, Free Advice, and Wrackler comprising the batch. A notable absentee is Satin King, who will probably be seen out at the Canterbury Park Meeting. Great Northern Derby. After final payments seven horses remain in the Great Northern Derby, Edna Worthy, Derby Fame, and Historian being the only ones in the field who did not contest the New Zealand Derby last month. Although 'the field is small, there is some fine material engaged, and the race should prove worthy of its name. Ciro, Tempest, and Gold Paper, the place-fillers in the New Zealand Derby, will meet again in the Auckland classic. Trotting Contingent. The Rowe Trotting Cup has an entry of fifteen, but the name of Olive Nelson, the star performer at Aldington last month, is missing. As there is a fast class trotters' race at Greymouth early in the New Year she may be found racing there. Canterbury is strongly represented in the Rowe Cup by Ukulele Lady, Mountain Mist, Stand By, Fifa, Surprise Journey, and Sir Voyage. Reassessments. ASHBtJRTON MACES MOORBIRD WINS HANDICAP. LOCKSLEY RETURNS TO FORM. ' The Ashbuiton County Eacing Club had ideal weather conditions for their Summer Meeting held on Saturday, and there was a satisfactory attendance of racegoers. The course was in exceptionally fast . order owing to the dry spell being experienced in the district, and many of the competitors were troubled by the hard going. The totalisator turnover was seriously affected by outsiders returning the dividends in the two opening events, the sum of £.5703 being handled, for seven events, as against £7401 for eight races on the corresponding programme lsst year. It was estimated that this total would result in the Meeting showing a slight profit. The throughout were again carried out in an excellent manner, and promptitude enabled patrons making use of the, splendid train service provided, to reach their destinations at the scheduled time. The winner, Ma Belle Polly, was always of the leading division, and shot to the front as soon as the Straight was er/tered upon. Sailor's Love, High Tor, Pharaoh, and Countermarch, each showed promise inside the distance, but it was left to High Tor to challenge the leader. In a hard tussle, however, Ma Belle Polly was able to hold on to gain a head verdict. Pharaoh was two lengths away with Sailor's Love, Elude, and Countermarch next. This was Ma Belle Polly's first win, and it served as Bomc recompense i'or the patience displayed with her by Mrs J. Campbell. Ma Belle Polly fads probably lucky in that High Tor lost ground at the start, and had her beaten a stridei past the post. Pharaoh finished

on well and would have done better over a longer journey. Sailor's Love was in a commanding position at the home turn, but did not make the showing expected of her in the straight, and it was evident the hard track settled her. Merry Peel, who was in keen demand by South Canterbury visitors, lost his chance by being badly left at the start. Elude was in want of the race, but his prospects of winning a race over the holiday period do 'hot look promising. Battle Hero did not get the breakaway that enabled him to spreadeagle the field at in fact he was one of the slowest away and failed to get up to the leaders at any part. Countermarch was disappointing, while Semper Paratus gave one of his poor displays, which would not be very encouraging to his new ow'ner. . Two Big Dividends. The public voted strongly for Essay, driven by O. E. Hooper, in the Melrose Trot Handicap, but he was unlucky at the start in being one of the second division of the limit markers, and when some of.those in front of him played up, he was unable to get going until his task was hopeless. The second choice, Edna Worthy, began smartly, and was well placed in the leading division until the home turn was reached, whore he commenced to drift, and was well out of the contest early in the run home. Midnight Sun, Doll Dance, Tatsy de Oro, Claranda, and Historian, were most prominent at the turn for home, and the result was in doubt until well inside the distance, at which point Claranda showed out, and engaged Doll Dance in an interesting finish. The latter, who had put up a solid race, and was paying a substantial dividend to win, weakened in the last few strides, and Claranda was able to beat her to the past by two lengths. Fairhead came with a late run to gain third money, two lengths away, with Tatsy de Oro, Midnight Sun, and Historian next Opposition Outclassed. The principal event, the Tinwald Handicap, was an easy proposition for the favourite, Moorbird. She followed Winsome Hind and Wise Choice into the straight, but had them beaten inside the distance, and went on to win in an effortless manner, by two lengths, from Winsome Hind, who stayed on to beat the fast-finishing Ramo by a neck. Wise Choice was half a length back in front of Honeycomb, Starshooter, Rational 11., and Topere. There was never any doubt about Moorbird 'a superiority once she was called upon. She will not be raced during the holidays. and will be given .an easy time until the opening of the autumn programmes. Owing to T. Green being unable to get down to the weight, L. J. Ellis was given the mount. Winsome Hind ran a satisfactory race and should collect some stakes on the northern trip. Bamo found the journey j too short, and will fare better later on. Wise Choice was in second place to within two chains of the post, and would { have kept her position but for her rider getting his reins. and whip entangled, and being unable to do his mount justice. Honeycomb and Starshooter were, both done with inside the distance, while Rational 11. was always in the rear and had only Topere behind him at the finish. Her First Win. < Lochlaggan was made a staunch favourite for the Lagmhor Plate and she won from end to end. She led into the straight from Autumn Bird, Silver Ring, Hilary, and Terra Firma, and although these momentarily closed on her at the distance, she stuck to her task to gain a short length victory from the two-year-old Hilary, who beat Terra Firma by a neck. Hurlingham was a length away next, in front of Manetho, Silve 1 * Ring, and Autumn Bird. The winner ran up to her track form on this occasion, but was all put at the finish. Hilary surprised even his cont nexions by his good showing. He was always prominent, and completed his task in a manner befitting a much more seasoned galloper. Terra Firma is a four-year-old gelding by. Acre from Minor, and promises to become useful Hurlingham, a three-year-old brother to Ranelagh, was responsible for an impressive Bhowing, as he was one of the last to find his feet,, and gave* the leaders a big break entering the straight. His finishing run was suggestive of better results ahead. Silver Ring, who was in keen request, was one of the leaders for half a mile only, and it would appear as if he will require moA timeAutumn Bird, a 1 sister to Moorbird, was a surprising second choice. She acted as Lochlaggan's nearest attendant until inside the distance, where; she cried enough. Locksley Prevails. The finish of the Moreton Hack Han- t dicap was: confined to the three "best supported, but not in the order of the betting. Gold Pit took charge at the end of two furlongs, and led throughout the back and into the straight, from Crash, Juniper, Babel, and Locksley. The two leaders retired at the straight entrance, and Juniper was left in charge, while Locksley made a for- ; ward move on the outside, and had drawn up to Juniper inside the distance. A close tussle ensued, but Locksley always had Juniper's measure, and beat him home. by a neck. Babel finished on well into third place, a length away, with a big gap to Nightcap, who was followed by Gold Pit, Pixie Gold, and Fortune's Wheel. Locksley executed a very creditable performance, as he was several lengths behind the leaders with half the distance covered, and had only commenced to improve his position nearing the halfmile. Juniper gave evidence that he would be better suited to a mile journey. He is to go north with JV D. Jones's team and should do well on the Ellerslie course. Babel was strongly supported in the face of track work only, and she reeled off a satisfactory race for first attempt over the ground. Gold Pit was responsible for ai fast pace being set, but lasted only to the straight entrance. Grecian Prince failed badly. He gave trouble at the I start and lost a good deal of ground and although he put" in a strong run along the back, he drifted again as soon as the straight was encountered.. Pixie Gold covered a lot of extra ground owing to his rider meeting with an injury at the dispatch. Crash showed his usal turn of speed by being one of the leaders to the straight, but was last at the finish. West Coast Winner. Solvent monopolised speculation in the Wakanui Handicap, but was never in a prominent position and finished in behind the placed horses. The Raideu and Sleipner were, together entering the straight, from Taku Tama, Solvent, and Ranelagh, and when the leaders were done with at the distance, Taku Tama took charge. Ranelagh then executed a solid run and fifty yards from/the post appeared/ likely to gain the honours, but his effort was badly timed and Taku Tama was able to secure a neck victory. Ball Dress was half a length back, with Solvent, Arrowmir, The Raider, and Sleipner next. The winner hails f roni Reef ton, but in company with Monastic, in the same ownership- has befen trained at Riccar. ton for some weeks past. Ranelagh, who like Hurlingham, race& in the interests of his i trainer, natroflly missed making a return to' the winning list, and many racegoers were under the impression he had got up owing-to the confident ' manner in which hii tHer handled him. The-gelding was- 0M t)i the rear, diviaion in the early .stage*, but gradually improved his poaitioa

from the half-mile post and was going so generously over the remainder of the journey that he should have gained the honours. Ball Dress was troubled by the hard track and took gome time to settle down, but her work over the final stages attracted attention. Solvent was again disappointing and showed bo sign of the pace she can unwind on the track. She made one promising effort in the straight, but it had little impression on the leaders. The Auckland trip will not now be continued and the filly will be given a letup fbr a few weeks. Arrowmir went scratchily on the hard ground, and will find it difficult to win a race during the summer season. The Eaider, who has not had much galloping since being recommissioned, showed that he has retained his speed by leading into the straight, but there his condition gave out. Sleipner ran another disappointing race and a spell seems to be in view for him. A Narrow Victory. Plain Silk, Colorado, and Ruin were accorded most support for the Mayfield Trot Handicap, a very good betting race. On Parade and Colorado were first to show out and with half a mile covered On Parade was in front from Colorado and Plain Silk, Autowin, and Copper Nob, with Harvest Time at the head of the others. Down the back straight Colorado took charge from Autowin and Plain Silk, while, Kaywood at this stage, made a forward (movement. Turning for home, Colorado held command from Copper Nob, Plain Silk, and Autowin, with On Parade and Harvest Time still handy and 4fee colours of .Royal Parade becoming prominent. Halfway up the straight, Royal Parade came fast and issued a challenge tq Colorado, the pair drawing away from the field. Colorado maintained his position to the post under a hard drive to -beat Royal Parade by a neck, the third horse, Plain Silk, being five lengths further back, followed by Autowin,. Raywood, On Parade, Harvest Time, and Copper Nob, WAIKATO T.C. DAN DIRECT WINS PRINCIPAL RACE. (PAISS AHOCZATIOH TsLIOBAV.)
