NORTH CANTERBURY.

RANGIORA. The annual-meeting of the Methodist Ladies' Guild, held at the Parsonage daring the "week was well attended. Mrs S. Hleudersou presided. The report and balance-sheet presented by Mrs .Al. A. Lane were satisfactory, lleguiar monthly meetings had been held throughout the year and had been well attended. The report and balance-sheet were adopted, after which officers were elected. Mrs S. Henderson was re-elected president and the other officers were re-elected. At the conclusion of the business the members were entertained to afternoon'' tea by the president and a pleasant time was spent, during which a number 01 musical items were, given, contributed to by Mrs Maunder, .Mrs C. Baillie, and Miss D. and T. Ayers. On Saturday afternoon a garden party was held at the resilience of Mrs AL. A. Lane, King street, Rangiora, to raise funds for the 'Methodist Church Missions. The pleasant weather atracted a large gathering, who spent a very pleasant afternoon. Garden golt, croquet, and other games were enjo5 r ed, and good business was done at the numerous stalls erected in the grounds for. the sale of gifts lor the children. Competitions were arranged which attracted many entries, and the judge, Mrs A. M. Carpenter, had difficulty in awarding the prizes. The results were: Decorated cart, V. Ellis and p. N'eeman; decorated bicycles, Edward Lewis and Myrtle Griffiths. Aiternon tea was also served and a hearty vote of thanks to Mrs Lane for opening her grounds and arranging the affair brought a very successful afternoon to a close. L>y means of their annual garden party the members of the Girls' Auxiliary connected with John Knox Church. Uangiora, raised £29 towards the Hbme and Foreign Missions of the Presbyterian Church. The gathering was held on Saturdav afternoon in Mr R. Mo ntosh's grounds and was largely .attended. There were stalls for the sale of a variety of gifts, and afternoon tea was served at tables under.the shade of the spreading branches of a very large walnut tree. Much to the delight of the children Father Christinas arrived in his chariot escorted by | the North Canterbury Pipe Rand, and he distributed toys and sweets with a lavish hand. The juveniles of the Busy Bees Society were associated with the effort and their stall added £2 18s to the proceeds. The pipe band played at intervals, giving an appropriate Scottish tone to the gathering. WAIAU. Considerable interest was taken at Waiau in the election results, and a large number of residents assembled at the Post Ofifice, where a loud speaker had been installed by th<J postmaster, and where the results as they came through were displayed on blackboards. Unfortunately interruptions were caused by several irresponsible individuals who, regardless of the wonien and children present, fired 'large crackerbombs in among the crowd and even under a standing motor-car. The annual picnic of the Waiau School was held on Friday on the property of Mr J. 0. Sanderson at a spoton tne banks of the Waiau River, the children and a largo number of par- ' ents being, conveyed to the picnic grounds, in motor-cars. The weather "was fine and pleasant shade was piven by the willow trees. With bathing, 'tfilces, games, and various other sportsi the children had a full day.

CHORLTON-LITTLE AKALOA. Last week the pupils of the Chorlton and Little Akaloa Schools, witji their teachers, paid a visit' to thd local cheese factory, where Mr Murphy, the manager, demonstrated the whole process of cheese-making ■ from the weigh-ing-in of to th© crating or the finished cheese. ' At' the end of the demonstration* Owen Waghorn,- on behalf of the other p\ip»ls; thanked Mi' Murohy for his kindness. Although the factory has been in operation for eloso on 40 years, this is first, time that

such a demonstration has been given, and the children thoroughly appreciated it. RUSSELL'S FLAT. Pastures and crops have benefited by the rain, although there is a drop the cream supply from the district, thanks to. the recent dry weather. Farmers are busy preparing land for rapeand turnips, and shearing has begun in several sheds. At the recent social and dance, tne following were the winners of competitions. Miss D. Adkins, Mrs Cooper, Mr.Smith,: and Mr A. Bloor. Music for the dance was provided by Mr Hurnni. 'I he last two social evenings of this year are to be held on December 10th and 22ndA large gathering of representatives from Russells's Flat attended the combined school sports, held at springfield, recently. The weather was une, and an enjoyable day was Springfield School was again successful in retailing the shield. Miss Lamb, of l]emuka, is staying with her sister, Mrs Pritchett. Mrs Welsh- (Ghristchurch) is visiting "Baldoon." . . Mrs :Ryan left last week for Jhmftiu, where she, will' spend Christmas with relatives.

PREBBLETON. The December meeting of t lie Mothers' Union, which will he heiu this week, will take the form of a gift afternoon. Members are asked to contribute gilts of groceries, dairy, or garden produce, or of money, which will be forwarded to 'the Deaconesses' Home in Christehnrch as a Christmas gift. The programme arranged by the local Amateur .Sports. Club for their meeting on January 2nd includes, in addition to the cycling and running races,' a number of field events. Extensive improvements are being carried out to the grounds and, given favourable weather, a distinctly successful meeting is anticipated In the Parish Hall on Thursday evening a delightful concert programme, arranged by Mrs .Stephen Parr, of Christehnrch, was presented_to a large audience, all the numbers being greeted with enthusiastic applause. The accompaniments' were played by Miss Dorothy Filkins, and at the conclusion the Rev, IT. H. Jones eordiallv thanked the party lor providing such an excellent entertainment. LADBROOKS. Miss Menzie Foster, eldest daughter of Mr and Mrs T. Foster, was a successful candidate in the recent music examinations held in Christehnrch. Miss Foster is a pupil of the Addiugton Cou veil I. A meeting of the tennis club committee was held on Thursday evening: when tho report of the lecent dance was presented. With some money still to come in from the sale 01, tickets, a very good credit balance was shown. A special vo.e of thanks was passed to .Mrs T. It was decided to call a general meeting 111 March of next year.
